The Canadian Museum of Civilization was swarming with families recently, drawn by the museum's special
Halloween-themed events and a dismal weather forecast. But, while long lineups clogged the museum's
lobby and parking garage, relatively few visitors bothered to check out special kiosks set up to give the
public a chance to shape the Gatineau institution's planned transformation into a new Canadian Museum of
History. More/LIRE PLUS

Canadian Conference of the Arts ends 67-year run
The Globe and Mail Share/Partager
The Canadian Conference of the Arts is folding this week, ending a 67-year run as the country's oldest and
largest arts advocacy organization. The official announcement is to be made in Ottawa by CCA national
director Alain Pineau. The collapse of the CCA comes in the wake of the Harper government's decision
earlier this year not to provide $780,000 the organization said it needed to transition to being self-
sustaining. The hope was the self-sustaining model could be fully implemented by mid-2015. More/LIRE

More/LIRE PLUS

Alberta teacher ecstatic over Empress of Ireland
Edmonton Journal Share/Partager
An Alberta teacher is lauding the Canadian Museum of Civilization's acquisition of century-old artifacts
from the Empress of Ireland, an ocean liner that helped settle the Prairies. Nearly 500 artifacts from the
Empress of Ireland, the largest maritime disaster in Canadian history, were acquired by the Canadian
Museum of Civilization in April and kept under wraps until this week. More/LIRE PLUS
Whitby museum keeps youth connected to their roots

Mary Curran knows first-hand about the power of the written word. Upon reading about the need for more
volunteers at the Whitby Historical Museum, which was on the verge of closing last spring due to lack of
funds, she immediately signed up to help. "The museum is run solely by volunteers and I'm amazed at how
it's kept going that way," says Ms. Curran, a Whitby resident and retired high school principal who
volunteers as a member of the Whitby Historical Society once a week. More/LIRE PLUS
