FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nanaimo Sports Hall of Fame Announces 2012 Inductees - September 2012

The Nanaimo Museum Sports Hall of Fame has four new inductees, thanks to the Nanaimo community which has once again nominated people who have made a significant contribution to sport in the city and elsewhere. This year we are pleased to invite you as we present the inductees, chosen by the Sports Hall of Fame committee, at the Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday September 22 at ??? pm.

Adding to the prestigious list of local athletes, and builders, who already have their names permanently inscribed on the Sports Hall of Fame wall are:
Mary (Frizzell) Thomasson - Sprint - inducted in the Pioneer category
Jim Gold - inducted in the Builder category
Don Ashbee - Lacrosse - inducted in the Athlete category
Alyson Forsythe - Ski Racer - inducted in the Athlete category

Mary (Frizzell) Thomasson
Born in Nanaimo on January 27, 1913 - died 1972
By 1925 Mary had established herself as one of Vancouver's premier young sprinters. Frizzell ran through life with a passion and enthusiasm. As far as Mary was concerned, she loved running and every girl should have the chance to feel the joy it gave her. The 1932 Los Angeles Olympics were an obvious career highlight. Frizzell ran both of her 100m heats against the eventual gold medallist, Stella Walsh, who upon her death in 1980 was actually discovered to be male. In the 4×100m relay, the Canadian team of Frizzell, Lillian Palmer, Mildred Fizzell, and Hilda Strike tied the American foursome in 47 seconds flat, both bettering the existing world record. They were not only BC's first female Olympians, but also this province's first female Olympic medallists. In her last competitive season in 1935, she rattled off four 1st place finishes at the BC Championships, including a broad jump record that lasted 16 years. For the next 20 years, Mary coached for the Pacific Athletic Club. Among the many prominent athletes she coached were Eleanor (Cave) Whyte, Donna Gilmore, and Luella Law, voted the outstanding Canadian female athlete of 1952.

Jim Gold
Born in Nanaimo on October 27, 1921 - died February 21, 1990
Jim was good at all sports but his first love was soccer. He played Juvenile 3rd. and 2nd.Division on the Galahad's soccer team winning the 1936 -37 Provincial Championship. In the same season he played on the championship winning Orange Crush Lacrosse Team. He was a member of the UBC Varsity soccer team before enlisting in the army during WWII. Jim played for the Canadian Army
championship team in 1944 and 1945 scoring the winning goal vs. England in the championship game played at Wembley Stadium. Jim's prowess on the pitch or field was only matched by his commitment to youth and community sports. He was a PE teacher, soccer coach and vice-principal at John Shaw and John Barsby schools until his retirement in 1981. In 1958 he was the Chairman of the Centennial Committee which created the Departure Bay Field and in the same year he was awarded the BC Centennial Award of Merit. The Jim Gold Field, a baseball diamond at Gyro Park, was named after him by the Nanaimo Minor Baseball Association and the City of Nanaimo Parks-Recreation.

Don Ashbee
Born on September 9, 1930 in Weston Ontario - died ???
Don started his sporting career in hockey in 1946 with the Toronto Young Rangers and in 1950 he scored 70 points with the American Hockey League. He was destined to be a high draft pick until his career was ended by injury. Don started Sr. Lacrosse in Owen Sound in 1950. He helped the Peterborough Timbermen to win the Mann Cup in 1951-52 and after the team was renamed the Trailermen, they continued their cup winning ways in 1953 and 54. He moved to Nanaimo in 1955 to play for the Nanaimo Timbermen. Don Ashbee was recognized for his lacrosse talents in 1960 by winning the Commission Trophy as the WHL's Most Valuable Player in the regular season. In 1974 Don Ashbee was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame amassing 880 goals and 390 assists. Don stepped on the ice again in 1974 when he curled for the National Champion Curling Team. A colourful player, Don Ashbee played 17 years of senior lacrosse and played on five National Championship teams.

Alyson Forsythe
Born October 14, 1978 in Nanaimo
Allison Forsyth started skiing at age two and when she was 14 she participated in a ski/school program at Pemberton Secondary, near Whistler. At age 16 Allison made the BC Ski Team and two years later in 1997 she was named to the Canadian National Ski Team. From 1995 to 1998 Allison competed on the national and international stage, earning a Gold Medal at the Canada Winter Games in 1995 and placing in the top 5 - 3 times at World Junior Championships. From 2000 to 2008 she was an eight time Canadian National Champion, she ranked 15th in Giant Slalom in the world. She had 5 World Cup podiums with three silver and two bronze. In 2002 Allison proudly represented Canada at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah and at the 2006 winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. It was there during a training run that she suffered a serious knee injury which eventually ended her racing career and led to her retirement in 2008. She was a great ambassador for her sport during her entire career and remains an inspiration to many both on and off the slopes.
