Richmond Art Gallery
Open Conversations: The Art Practice of Carole Condé + Karl Beveridge
September 15 to November 10, 2012

Richmond Art Gallery presents the first solo exhibition by Toronto artists Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge in Western Canada. The exhibition curated by Scott Marsden, entitled Open Conversations: The Art Practice of Carole Condé + Karl Beveridge explores their unique collaborative art process. For the past 30 years Carole and Karl have defined their photo-based art practice around working with diverse communities and networks, exploring the concept of dialogue as a form of socially engaged art practice that allows their subjects to become participants in the work.

Open Conversations takes the form of two visual investigations. The first explores the photographic practice of Condé and Beveridge, who have developed a unique process involving direct community collaboration in the production of their work. Condé and Beveridge engage viewers through diverse visual art strategies that analyze contemporary social, cultural and political issues. The exhibition investigates the artists' use of dialogical aesthetics as a way of breaking down the conventional distinctions between artist, artwork and audience.

The exhibition presents a range of art works from the 1980-1990 and 1991-2011 periods, including a selection of notes, drawings, storyboards, photo shoots, stage-props and other material used by the artists. Over the course of their creative collaboration the artists have had over 50 solo exhibitions nationally and internationally in public spaces, art galleries and museums, and non-art sites. Recently their work has been included in exhibitions at the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Cork, Ireland, a survey exhibition at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston, Ontario, and the Noorderlicht Photofestival, Groningen, Holland.

The artists participated in a residency in June 2012 with staff working at the various cultural agencies within the Richmond Cultural Centre to create a new photographic work focusing on "cultural work". The use of participatory action research was critical to the making of this photo-narrative as the subjects of the art work were also the participants and active collaborators in the development of this art work and creative process.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 15 from 3 to 5pm. Both the artist Carole Condé and curator Scott Marsden will be in attendance. An Artist Talk will be held prior to the opening beginning at 2pm. Both events are free and open to the public. The exhibition continues through until November 10, 2012.

Modern Press is pleased to launch, FRONT LINE, a 244 page publication containing 200 colour images and interviews with 18 international contemporary photo-based artists and their artwork. The work of Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge is included in this collection. The interviews are presented in Chinese text (simplified).

The Richmond Art Gallery is located in the Richmond Cultural Centre 7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond. For more information about the exhibition and related programming please visit www.richmondartgallery.org.
