I am a program coordinator in the Division of Continuing Studies at the
University of Victoria; part of my job involves planning and delivering
community education courses in the arts. From 7 to 9 pm on September 27
we are offering a session entitled Revitalizing the Downtown Core: A
Success Story. This session is being taught by Shari Khadem who holds a
Master of Architecture and Urban Design degree from the University of
Science and Technology, Iran (see session description below).
We were wondering if it might be possible to post a notice about this
presentation on your listserv. We believe that the topic would be of
great interest to your members and we would be very grateful if you
could help to get the word out.
Here is the full description:
*Revitalizing the Downtown Core: A Success Story*
This presentation provides an example of community planning in the city
of Isfahan, one of the most significant historical cities in Iran. This
experience in Isfahan illustrates a combination of heritage
conservation, urban planning and community involvement strategies
designed to revitalize the downtown core, with remarkable parallels to
North American experience.
Starting with the history of the downtown area of Isfahan over 800 years
ago, we will trace the expansion of the city into the suburbs, while the
core area declined. With services like water supply, gas and hydro
already existing in the centre of the city, the challenge was to attract
people back to downtown through improved living conditions and
revitalized neighbourhoods. This success story from another culture
provides thoughtful lessons for our local urban context.
