Join City Planner Michael Gordon for a presentation on the Canadian Pacific Railway and its influence on Vancouver’s past and present. Until a couple of decades ago, the Canadian Pacific Railway and its lands and facilities were a prominent feature of Downtown Vancouver. Many residents have forgotten that the CPR played a central role in the emergence of Vancouver as a city for more than a century. The presentation will speak to the legacies of the CPR in the structure, character, and development of Vancouver.
Did you know that the CPR played a central role in:
Establishing the subdivision patterns of much of the city, including the grid of wider arterials, narrower local streets, and back lanes;
Encouraging the centre of the central business district to shift from Gastown and Victory Square towards Granville, West Georgia, and Burrard Streets;
Building and operating the Vancouver Opera House, the grandest theatre in the city until the early part of the 20th century, on a site adjacent to the CPR Hotel Vancouver on Granville Street
Michael Gordon is the City of Vancouver’s Senior Central Area Planner for the downtown peninsula and the Central Broadway Corridor. He has worked for the City since 1985 and worked as a city planner for 36 years. The Gordon family arrived in Victoria, the Lower Mainland, and Fort Kamloops in the 1870’s. His Great Uncle, George Gordon was a resident of Vancouver when the City was founded and owned a “Haberdashery” on Water Street. His Great Uncle Marsh Gordon was Mayor of Kamloops and the Presiding Magistrate at Billy Miner’s trial for the famous robbery of a CPR train.
