Couture at the Castle
Victoria, BC, Canada - A fashion show, trunk sale and cocktail party will be held at Craigdarroch on Saturday, April 20th, 2013, to benefit the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society.
"Couture at the Castle" will feature clothing and styles by locally owned independent boutiques and salons: Paradise Boutique, Lark & Sparrow, and Amelia Lee. Hair and makeup will be provided by local salons: Lab Salons, Fish Hair Salon, Shampoo Hair Bar, Carmanah, and The Green Kiss. Down-tempo music will be provided by three local DJs: Dust (Sunset Labs), LRJ (Tech Cows), and Lyssa. Beer, wine and cider will be served at a cash bar. Guests should note that the trunk sale and bar will be CASH ONLY.
"Craigdarroch Castle is an exquisite venue to highlight local fashion," explains Elisabeth Hazell, Manager of Operations and Development at Craigdarroch Castle. "Likewise, we are very fortunate to have the support of these small businesses during these difficult economic times. As a National Historic Site which does not receive Federal funding, it is truly inspiring to have the local community behind us."
Tickets to the event, which runs from 8:00 - 11:00 pm, are $15 in advance or $18 at the door. The event is limited to ages 19+. Members of the Craigdarroch Castle Society can receive $5.00 off by calling the Castle directly. The price point has been kept low, and with a limited capacity, the event is expected to sell out.
The Castle is a unique venue for such an event. Unlike most other historic house museums, Craigdarroch has been set up so that guests can actually enter each of the rooms. Additionally, although red wine is restricted, beverages are permitted in the museum. Ms. Hazell explains, "The experience of a cocktail party at Craigdarroch is truly exceptional. It is easy to imagine attending a lavish social function here during the Victorian era. Three of the Dunsmuir daughters lived here and one can imagine the excitement of receiving an invitation to a party at Craigdarroch. This fashion show will bring the energy and excitement of attending a Dunsmuir event, but with a modern twist, naturally. "
One quirk about the space: no dancing or stiletto heeled shoes. "It's something we've got to work with, the floors are old and easily damaged, and we just have so many fragile artifacts around. So we just keep the music chill and emphasize that we host cocktail parties, not dance parties. And although I love the idea of a dance party at Craigdarroch," Ms. Hazell adds with a laugh, "I don't miss wearing stilettos at all!"
Tickets will be $15 in advance or $18 at the door and will be available at: Paradise Boutique, Lark and Sparrow, and in the Craigdarroch Castle Gift Shop. Tickets will also be online at www.thecastle.ca<http://www.thecastle.ca>

About Craigdarroch Castle: Built in 1890 for Scottish Immigrant and self-made millionaire, Robert Dunsmuir, Craigdarroch is a stunning example of Victorian-era "Richardsonian Romanesque" architecture. It is recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada, and run by the non-profit charitable organization, The Craigdarroch Castle Historic Museum Society. Having been a working building for many years as a military hospital, college campus, institutional office and music conservatory, today it is now operated as a Historic House Museum.
