Foundations to Build On
Kelowna Museums builds new exhibit on history of Kelowna.

Since the first permanent settlements in the area, the land that is now encompassed by the City of Kelowna has undergone constant change and growth, and the Kelowna Museums Society has built an exhibit, which takes the visitor through the history of that growth and change.

For the first wave of settlers who were arriving in the Okanagan Valley in the 1860s and decades that followed, the focus was on large scale ranching, with subsistence farming for survival. Around the turn of the twentieth century, land development companies such as Kelowna Land and Orchard, and the Okanagan Land Company, were buying up and subdividing lands that were previously undeveloped, or that had been parts of large, pre-empted ranches. These new, smaller lots were marketed mainly to British and Eastern Canadian buyers, and the centre of the local economy shifted to fruit growing.

Living closer together and on smaller properties, the new settlers got to know their neighbours, and communities began to grow as more residents settled. Along with higher population densities, businesses, schools, churches and community halls were built to meet the needs of the residents, thus forming the foundations of the City of Kelowna.

Looking back, there is a lot to learn about our past – how and why areas were settled, who the early residents were, and where they lived. The growth of communities is as complex as the people make them up. Many visitors will recognize some of the stories that are featured in this exhibition, and others may have their own to share. Take advantage of interactive activities around the exhibit to share your stories, about the community that you live in. Your stories and your time in this city are part of the foundations that the future of our city will be built on!

To celebrate the opening of this exhibit, the Kelowna Museums invites the community to come out to the Okanagan Heritage Museum on Saturday, May 4th, 2013 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm to experience the new exhibit. For a donation of $1, you can take part in some fun family activities. At 11:30, one of the Okanagan’s pioneering women, Susan Allison, will be dropping by to share her pioneering experiences with you, so don’t miss out!
