July 29th. 2013

Dear Friend,

As you may already know, 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the first outpost of the Hongmen Society, otherwise known as the Chinese Freemasons Society, at Barkerville, British Columbia, coinciding with the development of Barkerville's Chinatown.

After the California Gold Rush of 1848/9, British Columbia's Cariboo Gold Rush was the most significant international gold rush in the history of North America, and Barkerville was its undisputed capital. Without Barkerville and its surrounding goldfields, British Columbia as we know it today would not exist. The significant role played by Barkerville's Chinese community and the Chinese Freemason Society in Barkerville has been increasingly recognized and celebrated over the past 150 years, both within Canada and around the world.

To commemorate this important anniversary, Barkerville Historic Town will host a two-day Chinese Cultural Festival on Saturday, August 24th and Sunday, August 25th, 2013 in the spirit of the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. On Saturday there will be lantern making, games, tours, Chinese school, and lion dances. In the evening there will be more entertainment and a lantern parade followed by fireworks. See the attached schedule for more information. Also see the attached information about the Banquet at the Lung Duck Tong Chinese Restaurant. On Sunday, in addition to more games, tours and lion dancing, there will be a series of 20 minute academic presentations related to the contribution of Chinese pioneers in British Columbia.

This is an exciting weekend to visit Barkerville. We encourage you to join us in celebrating the sesquicentennial of Barkerville's Chinatown and the Chinese Freemason Society. For more information contact Judy Mooring atjudy.mooring at barkerville.ca or 1.888.994.3332 ext. 29.
