Vernon's Youth will Riot on the Rooftop!

 

What: 5th Annual Riot on the Roof!

Where: Vernon Parkade, 3228 31st Ave. Vernon, BC

Get ready Vernon, there is going to be a Riot high above the city. On
Saturday, August 24th, the Vernon Public Art Gallery hosts the 5th annual
Riot on the Roof alternative arts event. Every year the event offers
something new for its young audience and 2013 will be no different.

 

Peter Downie and his crew at Chatters Salon will perform a live hair show,
with extravagant styles, fashion and make-up designs. Downie is no stranger
to Riot, participating in last year's event with Mackenzie Jones Designs,
but this year his artistic talents will take centre stage in a unique hair
design show. Both Downie and Chatters employee Emily Jacob are Redken
Certified Colourists who recently featured their award winning styles in the
Rock 'n Rococo Affair Fashion Show in Kelowna this past June.

 

"We are really fortunate to have so many talented artists in the area, and
Peter Downie's talent is an example of how art can be expressed in our
everyday lives. Whether it is fine art in a formal gallery setting or an
expressive personal style, art is accessible to everyone and we are excited
to see Chatters perform with a live hair show at Riot on the Roof. And to
see a show of this calibre, in an outdoor show at night, with a live metal
band... it's not your average evening in Vernon." - said Jamie Friesen, VPAG
Youth Ambassador.

 

Also new this year for artists is a Chalk Art contest. A popular, accessible
and inexpensive form of street art, chalk art has been seen around the world
right under our feet. The Gallery is offering space for artists to show off
their 2D talents in chalk pastels on the top floor of the Parkade for anyone
wishing to take part. $150 cash is awarded for top prize of the night.

2013 Riot artists include some fresh young talent from around the Thompson
Okanagan and Vancouver regions. Scheduled to perform at Riot are: Main Stage
Bands; Paperboy, Crowd the Joanna, The Dragstrip Devils, Bear Meets World,
Luke Agawin, Xul, Naked Ghosts, Amistad. Acoustic
singer/songwriters/musicians; Raquel Warchol, Peter McKillop, Eli Garlick,
Fern. Dance Performance; Mousai Entertainment. Spoken Word/Poets; Nathan
Hare, Riley Strother, Morgan Armstrong, Molly Woodford. Hair Show by Peter
Downie and Chatters Salon (including Fashion and Make Up). Film by Skookum
Sound. Visual Artists; Catherine DeMontreuil, Emily Geen, Kait Serafin,
Jessie Suurallik, Emily Rice, Charla Maarschalk. Performance Artist;
Shimshon Obadia. 

 

The focus of Riot on the Roof is to promote youth involvement in the
Okanagan's artistic community and provide an opportunity to view and
participate in alternative forms of art and entertainment. Such art forms
include music, dance, fashion, film, performance, visual arts, and more.
This highly anticipated event is enjoyed by hundreds each year and promises
to provide a fun and riotous evening for all.



Riot on the Roof runs from 7:00 pm-11:00 pm on Saturday, August 24th atop
the Vernon Parkade, on the corner of 31st Ave and 33rd St. Tickets are $10,
available at the Gallery, Bean Scene, or at the door.
