"With every beat of my heart, my fingers dance with the cedar and stir memories almost lost. Grandmothers and aunts whisper their knowledge to my soul - encouraging, nourishing, nurturing, to make me and my basket whole. For their weaving is in me. With every warp and weft, they tell me so."

The atmosphere was quiet and focused during Saturday's Berry Basket Weaving Workshop. The silence was broken only by the occasional peel of laughter as the participants worked steadily throughout the day. The group of 15 had a sense of determination that resulted in some beautiful and functional works of art by the end of the day. As one new weaver described it, each person went home from the workshop with a new skill, but the craft would take a lifetime to master. Another agreed that the task required your full attention, but the challenge never ceased to be gratifying.

The Summer Weaving Workshop Series is proving to be extremely popular. Both the August workshops are full and we are seeing people signing up for more than one. Because of the interest shown in learning this traditional craft, Jessica Casey has now added two new workshops. On Saturday, September 14th, she will give a workshop on how to weave a cedar journal cover. On Saturday, September 28th, there will be another berry basket workshop. The workshops are one day events from 10 am to 4 pm, with a registration fee of $85. No previous experience is necessary. To pre-register, please contact the Museum at 604-886-8232. The spaces fill up quickly so call now to reserve a spot. Check out our Facebook page to see photos from the latest workshop.

Jessica is a self taught weaver of Coast Salish and Portuguese decent. She was born and raised in Egmont, B.C., but currently resides in Sechelt. Combining traditional Coast Salish construction and design with her own artistic vision, she creates beautiful baskets, hats and mats. Her creations can be found in numerous private collections worldwide and are now available in notable art galleries in the Lower Mainland.
