Archival Appraisal webinar
Archival appraisal is the foundation for building collections of long-term historical value. Careful selection of material for permanent retention ensures that institutional resources support only those holdings that meet acquisition criteria and contribute to the documentary heritage. Decisions leading to what is kept have immense consequences for how histories are written, and lie at the heart of archival professional practice.
The Canadian Council of Archives webinar on Archival Appraisal will provide an introduction to appraisal strategies and the elements of an archival appraisal report. As archivists, our decisions are informed by the principles and tools of current practice. The archival appraisal report not only records what informed the selection process, but also leaves an essential trace of what was eliminated so that future generations of researchers can judge those decisions. This webinar also compliments the content of the NAAB Bootcamp.
Instructor: Theresa Rowat
Working over 30 years in heritage and culture, Theresa brings specialized expertise in archival collections with a focus on visual and media holdings.
Preserve and Protect: Archives Security webinar
Many archives and special collections libraries are experiencing operational challenges. As a result, physical security of collections in the face of theft or vandalism of collections can be a growing concern. Materials stolen are often rare, valuable and irreplaceable. Security is a fundamental, integral component of archival management that is in part tied to appraisal, arrangement and description, reference and preservation. Protection of records includes: deterrents to theft; identification of missing items; environmental control; protection from fire, flood and other disasters; safe exhibition and loan procedures; and insurance for valuable items.
The Canadian Council of Archives webinar on Archival Security will provide an introduction to risk assessment, policies and procedures to minimize risks and prevent loss of records, security training for staff, security systems and equipment and crisis management.
Instructor: Iona McCraith
Iona is the AAO Archives Advisor (since May 2013) and since 1999 has also maintained a private practice as a preservation consultant and archival materials conservator.
Copyright Update Webinar: Bill C-11 & How it Affects Your Archives
Did you miss it earlier this year? CCA is pleased to once again offer this great webinar. This 90-minute webinar is designed to inform the archival community about changes to the copyright legislation.
What does your staff need to know? How does the new legislation affect your reference services, your digitization programs? ... your donors? .... your preservation program? Please join us to learn more about Bill C-11 and its implementation. Spend an interactive 90-minutes with us and learn about how the new amendments will affect your institution and your users.
Tap into the knowledge of session lead Nancy Marrelli, Senior Advisor on Copyright to the CCA Board of Directors. Nancy has closely followed copyright legislation and spearheaded copyright advocacy for the Canadian archival community for many years. Please join us to learn more about Bill C-11 and its implementation.
Instructor: Nancy Marrelli
Nancy is Archivist Emerita at Concordia University in Montreal and co-publisher of Véhicule Press. She is also the Special Advisor on Copyright for the Board of Directors of the Canadian Council of Archives.
NAAB Bootcamp
Monetary appraisal is a key element of archival donor relations and collections development, but how is monetary appraisal done? How should your institution prepare for monetary appraisal of a fonds/collection? How is fair market value determined when archival materials are unique by definition, and few sales records are available from auctions, used book stores, or price guides?
NAAB appraisers provide a professional opinion of value for various reasons. The NAAB Bootcamp has been designed specifically for highly motivated people seeking: to learn more about monetary appraisal; to help institutions acquire donations of cultural property as gifts in kind; and to work effectively with donors. Please join us, from the comfort of your own office or boardroom, to learn the essentials of monetary appraisal . This webinar series offers a combination of theory, practical skills and tools shared by an experienced NAAB appraiser. You will also take an active part in an exercise using appraisal examples. Background readings and a practical exercise are provided for the NAAB Bootcamp.
We are looking forward to introducing you to the world of monetary appraisal!
