Shapers of Place - Exploring the faces and places of the Sacred Headwaters

The BC Museum Association is exploring how museums, art galleries and archives can become key stakeholders in discussions around regional identity. Starting in 2013, the BCMA will travel to different regions in the province each year to host the annual general meeting and to provide tools for members and partners to become active promoters of regional identity and place.

In June of 2013, we are honoured to host Wade Davis as the BCMA's keynote AGM speaker and the thematic inspiration for this year's regional workshops. The theme is the museum's role in exploring the people and places that make the sacred landscapes and cultural geography of Northern BC so unique.

The hosting of this provincial workshop and AGM in Terrace and Kitimat meets the BCMA's mandate to engaging all regions of the province. For many heritage and arts professionals, attending conferences in the southern area of BC can be financially difficult. Holding the AGM in the Northwest provides an opportunity for northern BC institutions to have access to training and for the BCMA to engage with these institutions.

Event Schedule:

1)      1) Friday, June 14 2013 - Evening : BCMA Opening Reception at Heritage Park Museum, Terrace

2)      2) Saturday, June 15 2013 - Morning : Shapers of Place Workshop 1 + lunch ("Wayfinders" - facilitated by Wade Davis) at Kitselas Canyon National Historic Site, Terrace. This 3-hour workshop is designed to immerse the museum professional in a deep, emotive quest to understand the spiritual nature of landscape and how it can help understand the cultural geographies of different regions of BC.

  3) Saturday, June 15 2013 - Evening : Keynote Public Lecture ("Sacred Headwaters" - presented by Wade Davis) at Lee Theatre, Terrace.

4)      4) Sunday, June 16 2013 - Morning : BCMA AGM + Shapers of Place Workshop 2 + lunch ("Museums and Archives: The Way Forward") at Kitimat Museum & Archives, Kitimat. This 3-hour workshop is designed to help professionals identify the business case for museums, galleries and archives, to help them become more engaged in the knowledge and information sectors of the economy and to identify advocacy strategies for local organisations.  These are all key objectives identified by BCMA members during the 2012 Kamloops conference.
