Cultural Landscapes (HA 489G)

April 8 - 13, 2013; on-campus offering

Instructor: Wendy Shearer, FCSLA, CAHP

>From the landscapes associated with historic buildings, industries and rural communities, to traditional use sites of First Nations peoples, cultural landscapes are tremendously diverse resources that present special conservation and management challenges. This course explores the range and characteristics of cultural landscapes including designed gardens and parks, urban neighbourhoods, and traditional-use sites.

The course sets out the planning process for consultation, and the development of conservation strategies including preservation, restoration and reuse planning. It explores the current conservation standards and guidelines and tools such as designation, registration, and easements.

Topics include:

* defining and documenting cultural landscapes based on historic research, inventory and analysis of the cultural resources

* recognizing evolving interaction between natural systems and human interventions

* evaluating heritage values, significance, and integrity

* planning sustainable conservation and management strategies including preservation, restoration and reuse

* balancing conflicting resources and uses

Field trip / case study:
As part of the course, participants will undertake a field trip to D'Arcy Island, one of 15 islands in Gulf Islands National Park Reserve (www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/bc/gulf/carte-map-fl.aspx). D'Arcy Island will be used as a case study, whereby participants will apply an inventory, documentation and evaluation process to this complex and historically-rich site. In collaboration with Parks Canada staff, course participants will work in groups to evaluate the site's heritage values and cultural resources, identify issues and opportunities for its conservation, and propose management and interpretation strategies for its significant cultural landscape. This case study will provide course participants with the skills to apply a theoretical cultural resource framework to an actual site with multiple challenges.

What participants from the 2011 course offering have to say:
"I found this course opened my eyes to the broader, overall usefulness of cultural landscapes and all they take in."

"The instructor was wonderful and very passionate about her work."

Fee: Fee: CAD $693 (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options) including a CAD$75 materials fee and a CAD$100 tuition/registration deposit is required with each registration form.
