News Release

For Immediate Release

January 10, 2013

Mission, BC- Did you know that Mission was home to Western Canada's first
train robbery? That "Mission City" was virtually founded in one day by way
of the Great Land Sale in 1891, which was a massive land auction, the
largest of its kind in BC history? That James, Welton, and Horne Streets
are all named after one man? Or that the ruins in Heritage Park are from
the old St. Mary's Indian Residential School, but that that was not the
school's original location? Mission is much richer in history than the
majority of its residents know, in fact, I bet the very street you live on
is named after a fascinating pioneer; most in Mission are!

The Mission Museum has played a key role in conserving Mission's valuable
community history for decades. This is made possible by a team of
enthusiastic volunteers, whose contributions allow the museum to operate and
provide meaningful exhibitions and programs year round. Many opportunities
for volunteering are available at the Mission Museum, in a variety of areas,
such as heritage research, working with the artifact collection, artifact
photography and photo-editing, giving tours, and creating and assisting with
public programming. The Mission Museum is looking for community members to
join their team of volunteers and to become a part of preserving Mission's
historic past. Volunteering at the Mission Museum is very rewarding and
offers flexible times. Willa Robinson, a volunteer at the Museum for 3
years, states that volunteering at the Mission Museum "provides a space for
interactive learning that you can't get from reading a history book".

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at the Mission Museum, or
learning more about the variety of opportunities there, please contact the
Mission Museum at 604-826-1011 or info at missionmuseum.com. You can also drop
by the Museum, located at 33201 2nd Avenue, to speak to the Museum Manager
during our open hours which are Thursdays and Fridays from 10am-4pm and
Saturdays from 1pm-4pm.

The Mission District Historical Society operates three branches: the Mission
Museum, the Mission Community Archives, and the Heritage Places branch,
which are all dedicated to "recording our history, educating the community,
and preserving our heritage."
