*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:*

*PORT MOODY, BC, January 18, 2013 –** *After more than two years of work,
the Port Moody Heritage Society is releasing its masterpiece history of
Port Moody entitled “Tracks in Time: Port Moody’s First 100 Years” on
February 3, 2013. The book depicts life in Port Moody from 1880-1980
through historical photographs, text and first-hand accounts from residents.

The project was conceived in 2010 after the provincial government announced
funding cutbacks to the gaming grants. With a large portion of its funding
from gaming grants, the Port Moody Heritage Society started to think of
other options. The pieces fell into place when the Society learned of a
grant offered by Service Canada called “New Horizons for Seniors”. This
funding enabled the Society to work with local seniors to collect and
record history of the area to produce a history book.

>From there the project took off. The Society organized a Reminiscing Group
of local seniors which met monthly. These seniors were long time Port Moody
residents, many of whom had spent their childhood there in the 1940s. Port
Moody Station Museum staff recorded the sessions and selected some of the
more colourful stories to include in the book. This group also became a
resource for historical questions and in locating photographs of
significant places or events. Group participant Valerie Julian said,
“Helping with the book was so much fun! Reminiscing about the old times
living on Clarke St. and the people who were around then really brought
back memories.”

In addition to the Reminiscing Group, other seniors volunteered to
research, write, edit and proofread the text. The book was divided into 11
themes covering a range of topics from social life and civic services to
industry. Volunteers, who were “experts” in an area, were asked to
contribute. Staff at the Port Moody Station Museum filled in the gaps with
the help of their archival records and local seniors. This information was
added to the more than 200 oral histories and 6,000 photos the Society had
collected over the years.

The release of the book was timed to coincide with Port Moody’s Centennial.
While the years covered in the book are earlier than the 100 years of the
Centennial, it gives a detailed picture of how Port Moody grew from a town
of hundreds into the city of thousands it is today.

With contributions from “New Horizons for Seniors” and a variety of other
local sponsors and donors, the Society was able to publish a beautiful
coffee table style book of 192 full colour pages. Stunning photographs
paint the picture of life of Port Moody residents during pioneer days, war
time and the daily grind at the mills. Memorable Moments will make readers
laugh and cry as residents recall their personal stories. Port Moody
Station Museum Manager, Jim Millar, said his favourite part of this project
was, “talking to people and learning about the history of Port Moody.” For
him, “Knowing the stories of the community created a real connection and
love for the area.”

The Society hopes that with this book, Port Moody’s past can be celebrated
and shared among long-time residents and those who recently made the area
their home. Money raised from book sales will provide a secure source of
funding to support the work of the Port Moody Heritage Society and Port
Moody Station Museum.

Join the Port Moody Heritage Society at the Port Moody City Hall Galleria
on Sunday, February 3rd from 3:30-4:30pm to celebrate the launch of this
important historical piece. “Tracks in Time: Port Moody’s First 100 Years”
