RICHMOND ART GALLERY

Exhibition Dates: February 2 - March 24, 2013

Title: Andante (a walking pace)

Opening Reception Saturday, February 2, 3:00-5:00pm

Artists: Cheryl L'Hirondelle, Mike Andrew McLean, Haruko Okano, Ruth
Scheuing, UWHAH; a collaborative entity of Vancouver-based artists.

The title of the exhibition draws from the tempo marking, andante, to
mean - "at a walking pace" - a moderately slow pace that enables one to
be attentive to one's surroundings, literally and imaginatively. The
history of walking is an intriguing one with the capacity for narratives
that hold cultural, political, social and spiritual meanings.

The works in the exhibition Andante (a walking pace) are conceived as a
conceptual practice, a process from which emerge diverse narratives
reflecting artists' responses to the various urban and rural landscapes
they move in and consider. Walking has an intimate relationship with the
earth - whether it is covered in concrete or left bare. Cheryl
L'Hirondelle and Ruth Scheuing explore the urban environment; their
responses to the city's architecture and geography recall the
'Situationists' and 'Psychogeography', and the practice of "derive"
(drifting). Through their unplanned navigations to encounter new and
authentic experiences, both artists focus our attention to details
abstracted from their exploratory walks. The natural environment is the
terrain traversed in Haruko Okano and Mike Andrew McLean's work. Haruko
Okano immerses herself in nature to focus her attention and to better
ensure an unmediated experience. Mike Andrew McLean's images of the
Canadian Rockies evidence a changing landscape while reminding us of its
impact in on the formation of a collective Canadian identity. The
collaborative artists, UWHAH, seek to bridge both wilderness and urban
contexts, responding to the exigencies of survival, transportation, and
modern airline travel with a working canoe that can be broken down and
reconfigured to be carried as luggage.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, February 2 from 3:00 to
5:00 pm with opening remarks at 3:30pm. The artists will be in
attendance. An Artist Talk will be held prior to the opening starting
at 2:30pm. Both events are free and open to the public. The exhibition
continues until March 24, 2013.
