For Immediate Release:  Lion Dance at the Nanaimo Museum

Nanaimo- Celebrate Lunar New Year with the excitement of a Lion Dance at
the Nanaimo Museum.  The event features Chinese cultural activities,
performances and traditional games.  The event takes place on Saturday,
February 9 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and is hosted in partnership with the
Chinese Cultural Society.  "We appreciate the ongoing support and
dedication of the Chinese Cultural Society in making this event an
annual success," says Aimee Greenaway, Program & Volunteer Coordinator
at the Nanaimo Museum.

Visitors to the event will see demonstrations of traditional Chinese
calligraphy, paper cutting and Mah Jong games.  The performances include
traditional Chinese instruments and dances, including the artistic and
powerful Chinese Lion Dance.  "We've been hosting this popular community
event with the Chinese Cultural Society for the last 15 years," says
Greenaway.  "Every year there are new performers and crowd favorites
like the Lion Dance."  The Lion Dance will be performed at the end of
the event by Jacky Li, a local martial arts and Lion Dance instructor.

This year, Lunar New Year falls on the new Family Day long weekend.  "We
encourage families to attend the event," says Greenaway.  "It's a great
way for families to spend time together and there will be hands-on
activities that are fun for kids."  Visitors to the event will have the
opportunity to experience and enjoy Chinese culture while participating
in a Year of the Snake celebration.

Admission to Lunar New Year is by donation.  The Nanaimo Museum is
located in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, on Commercial Street.
