Education & Public Programs Internship
July 2013 to August 2014
Education & Public Programs Internship is a one-year term position. The position reports to the Curator of Education and Public Programs and includes the conceiving, planning, implementation and evaluation of education and public programming. This is a training position, incumbents are offered opportunities to learn and develop skills appropriate to begin a profession in museum programming. The position participates in the full range of activities in the Education and Public programs offices.
Hours: Includes some regular office hours, evenings and weekends.
Part time: (3 days/ week) July 15, 2013 - September 27, 2013
Full time: (35 hours/ week) October 1, 2013 - August 29, 2014
Rate: $16 / hr.
Public Programming: Working in collaboration with museum staff, artists, and a range of University and community members, the intern assists in the design of appropriate public events ranging from lectures, to performances, to conferences, to artist talks, to multi-day special events. This position assists in the full range of activities needed to plan and implement events this includes planning and budget meetings, scheduling student staff and liaising with artists and other professionals inside and outside the Museum.
Education programming: The internship involves supporting existing educational programming and developing and implementing new education programs. Education programs are focused on school-based audiences from K-12. Supporting existing programs entails working with a range of volunteers, professional staff and community members.
The position also entails administrative work in the Education and Public programs office. This work ranges from filing and tracking event costs to communicating with schools and community groups, and designing and distributing information on special events and public programs.
Summary: This position is suitable for a person with a background in anthropology, theatre, fine arts, museum studies and/or museum education. It is ideal for those interested education and public programs developed in collaboration with cultural resource people, community activists, artists, scholars, and curators.
Interns are required to work independently and possess good interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Interns need to possess basic computer skills in MS Office and internet programs. Some knowledge of desktop publishing or graphic design is an asset.
