Hello all,
This is my first tenure as a museum manager and some of the teething
problems we're facing is a bit of push-back from a few senior volunteers who
are taking issue with some of the changes we've made; such as, updating
accessioning policies, establishing proper artifact and archival material
handling practices, sprucing up work areas, etc. I've tried to be sensitive
to their needs but they view all these changes as a personal attack, despite
my multiple attempts to include them in the process and validate all of
their work and dedication thus far.
Recently I had a senior member arrive at the museum and aggressively lambast
me about the changes, raised voice and name-calling included. Sadly this has
happened to previous managers and isn't an isolated incidence. This has
prompted us to review volunteer policies and begin formulating a
zero-tolerance harassment policy. The Parksville & District Historical
Society Board and I would appreciate
advice and input from museums who have implemented similar policies in the
past.
We are looking for information or recommendations on
(1) a "Standards for maintaining a safe and secure workplace for
employees" , and
(2) a " Policy for museum volunteers/members" which particularly
addresses topics of volunteer rights and obligations, maintaining a safe and
respectful work environment for museum staff that is free of harassment and
bullying, managing unexpected behavior, etc.
You can either contact me directly, or the vice-president of the P&DHS Pippa
