Visitor Services & Gift Shop Manager
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery, built in 1894 in the historic village of 
Steveston, is a living monument to the individuals involved in BC’s 
fishing industry. The site is operated by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery 
Society, an independent, non-profit society and registered charity. 
Working in partnership with Parks Canada, the Society strives to preserve 
the history of the BC fishing industry and present it in an engaging and 
relevant way. The site is opened to the public year round and welcomes 
50,000 people each year from across the Lower Mainland and around the 
world. Visitors enjoy interactive exhibits and captivating guided tours. 
In addition, the Cannery houses a successful gift shop whose revenue 
supports the Society’s activities. 
Visitor Services staff play a vital part in ensuring a rewarding visitor 
experience and in promoting Cannery exhibits, programs, public events and 
memberships. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Visitor 
Services and Gift Shop Manager is a key position involved in the leading 
the visitor services team in achieving outstanding results and creating 
exceptional experiences for our guests and customers. 

Responsibilities:

Visitor Services 
You will lead a team of heritage interpreters and the Program Coordinator 
in ensuring visitors have a quality experience. Your duties include:
·       Implementing and continuously improving systems, standards and 
processes for visitor services management.
·       Developing and maintaining strong relationships and positive 
communications with stakeholder groups including visitors, members, 
volunteers, suppliers and community members.
·       Anticipating challenges and opportunities and developing and 
implementing innovative solutions for them.
·       Maintaining an updated knowledge of the Cannery and the local 
area.
·       Overseeing facility operation including, opening and closing 
procedures, and maintaining gallery readiness.
·       Ensuring that visitor services are available in both official 
languages.
·       Providing reports on visitor stats and working with the Marketing 
Manager in site promotion.
·       Working with the Public Programs Manager to develop tours, events 
and exhibits.
·       Working with the Marketing Manager and Program Coordinator to 
support marketing and membership initiatives. 
·       Delivering tours and programs from time to time as required.
·       Responding to customer complaints and comments.

Gift Shop Management
You will bring vision to the Cannery Shop in selecting quality items and 
ensuring that the shop is profitable. Your duties include:
·       Researching, ordering and stocking the gift shop including the 
development of new and unique products in conjunction with suppliers and 
other staff. 
·       Tracking gift shop sales and ensure accuracy and profitability. 
·       Working with Marketing Manager to promote the gift shop.
·       Ensuring invoices are reconciled and submitted for payment in a 
timely manner.
·       Ensuring the Point of Sale System is maintained and updated as 
required.
·       Coordinating year-end inventory.

Staff Management
You will develop a strong service oriented team and ensure a flexible, 
safe and supportive work environment. Your duties include:
·       Developing and managing the payroll budget for interpretive staff 
and retail assistants, including reviewing time sheets and schedules. 
·       Supervising the Program Coordinator in the development and 
delivery of education programs.
·       Supervising the Volunteer Coordinator in all aspects of volunteer 
management.
·       Maintaining a positive working relationship and open lines of 
communication with other departments. 

Other
·       Ensuring proper cash handling and deposit procedures are in place.
·       Working with the Executive Director and bookkeepers to ensure 
proper financial recording procedures are in place for admissions and gift 
shop revenue and expenses.
·       Participate in regular staff and committee meetings or other 
project groups as required
·       Attend conferences, seminars and external meetings as required

Skills:
·       University degree in a relevant discipline.
·       Experience in hospitality tourism, retail or related subjects. 
·       Proven success record in leadership and managing people. 
·       Experience working with cash transactions and processing credit 
card, debt payments. 
·       Knowledge of MS Office Suite. 
·       Knowledge of Profitek POS system is an asset.
·       Ability to set-up, take down and operate technical equipment is an 
asset.
·       Knowledge of French is an asset.
·       The ability to lift and carry boxes and supplies up to 35 lbs. at 
a time.
·       Ability to climb ladders and reach over head. 

Hours: 40 hours/week Tuesday – Saturdays regularly with flexibility for 
special events
