Hatley Castle plans loaned to National Gallery
Victoria - An original blueprint and three architectural plans for Hatley Castle are being loaned to the National Gallery of Canada as part of a new exhibition called Artists, Architects, Artisans: Canadian Art 1890-1918.
The exhibit looks at the integration of the arts during these crucial decades in Canadian history and how architecture, decorative arts and urban planning all came together for the first time. Hatley Park's architecture and landscaping is considered exemplary. The exhibit opens Oct. 25 and runs until Jan. 26, 2014.
Representatives from Denbigh Fine Art Services, a Vancouver art packing and moving company, will be preparing the plans for shipping
on March 6.
DATE: Wednesday, March 6
TIME: 1 p.m.
LOCATION: Royal Roads University Library. Turn right on College Drive, and the library is just past the castle. Limited parking is available.
"Artisanship was a major concern of architects who sought to realize buildings that married a high level of craftsmanship with exemplary design," said the exhibit curator Charles Hill. "This was effectively carried out in Samuel Maclure's Hatley Castle. The National Gallery of Canada is delighted to have this opportunity to include drawings for the building and its landscaping in this important exhibition."
"Loaning these documents means we're able to share our holdings with a national audience," said Royal Roads University Archivist Caroline Posynick. "It's an exciting opportunity to tell the story of our beautiful grounds and architecture. We are lucky to have this resource in our community."
Hatley Castle was built in 1908 for James Dunsmuir and his family. The formal Italian gardens were completed in 1913 from plans by Boston landscape architects Brett & Hall. Hatley Park is a National Historic Site. For more information, go to http://www.hatleypark.ca/ and http://www.royalroads.ca/about/history
