It would be good to expand the concept of major anniversaries beyond war and
peace (and sports?), for example:

2017 60th anniversary of Medicare federally; different years
provincially

2018 100th anniversary of women getting the vote federally; different
years provincially

Canada is commemorating :

2013 - Korean War

2014 - Start of WWI in 1914   100 years

2015 - End of WWII 1945 [Technically one can argue that WWII
still continues as the USSR never signed a peace treaty with Japan, upon
which it had declared war shortly before Japan surrendered to the Allies.]

2014-10-04 New Westminster will be unveiling a war memorial commemorating
the World famous "Wait for me, Daddy!" photo taken 1940-10-01 as the Duke of
Connaughts Own Rifles (now the BC Regiment) marched down 8th Ave in New
Westminster to board a ship for "overseas". As they were marching, 5-year
old "Whitey" Bernard broke away from his mother's grasp as his father
reached out for his hand. Unveiling 2014-10-04. Through research I was able
to determine the exact location where the principal characters were when the
photo was snapped, and as this spot is now in Hyack Square, owned by the
City, this is where the war memorial will be located.

In 2015, Irving House in New Westminster will be 150 years old, built 1865
(not earlier as claimed in some literature).

The BC Provincial Capital Commission is currently researching major upcoming
events between now and 2021 when the province celebrates 150th anniversary
of entry into confederation. While many have already be identified, please
help us all to our list by letting us know of any significant (ie 50th,
75th, 100 or greater) anniversaries that you may be preparing to celebrate
in the next eight years.

On the National agenda, we are already aware of:

*         100 Anniversary of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (1914 - 1919)

* 150th Anniversary of the Charlottetown Accord (1864)

* 200th anniversary of the birth of Sir John A. Macdonald (1815)

*         150th Anniversary Canadian Confederation (1867)

* 125th Anniversary of the Stanley Cup (1892)

* 100th Anniversary of the National Hockey League (1917)

* 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I (November 11, 1918)

* 150th Anniversary of BC joining Canadian Confederation (1871)
