Life a Focus for New Museum Exhibit

May Health, Peace and Contentment be Yours, a new exhibit, opens at the
Chilliwack Museum on Friday, March 15. Curator Paul Ferguson describes the
show as a thoughtful look at life, from birth to death. "It's meant to be
personal. We can all relate to visits to doctors, dentists, chiropractors
and other professionals. The labels and objects give visitors the
opportunity to relate their own experiences to the advances that have been
made in medicine over the last 150 years." He added that "from germ theory,
to stitches, mercurochrome to snares there's something in this exhibit that
will surprise or at least make you say ouch or oooo!"

The objects are drawn from the Museum's rich collection. Ferguson said that
many of the displayed objects have been in the collection for years and have
never been displayed. A.C. Wells' tooth puller is one of the oldest objects.
Wells arrived in Chilliwack in 1866 and was known as the person to see if
tooth extractions were needed. It wasn't until the arrival of Dr. J.C.
Henderson in 1887, and Dr. William Vaughn Davies, Chilliwack's first dentist
who came in 1906 that Chilliwack had any professionally trained health
professionals. Even the City's first surgeon, Dr. Albert Phelps, was a
latecomer, beginning his practice in 1954. The museum, Ferguson noted, has
objects owned or associated with some of these men.

A video that accompanies the exhibit includes interviews with Dr. Archie
Young and Dr. Henry Pauls who was Chilliwack's second resident surgeon.
Andea Lister tells about the history of the hospital as well in the video.

Many health professionals and collectors provided information and objects
for the exhibit, with tremendous enthusiasm.

The exhibit opens at 1:00 pm on March 15 and will remain in place for the
remainder of the year. For further information the museum can be reached at
604-795-5210.
