SMOC Presents:
Touring Treasures from the SMOC Collection

The Society for the Museum of Original Costume is stepping out!
We are proud to announce SMOC’s Satellite Display Program, coming to a community near you.

A historical costume phenomenon!

Spanning a period of 21 years, The British Columbia Society for the Museum of Original Costume (SMOC) has amassed a collection of over 3,000 costumes and artifacts, housed at our headquarters at historic Hycroft Manor. Apart from a privileged few (historians to fashionistas), the collection is rarely open to the general public. Our Lecture Series and special events allow a glimpse at some of SMOC’s many treasures; otherwise, the impressive collection is Vancouver’s best-kept secret --- until now!

SMOC will display special items from its collection, in cooperation with notable venues.

SMOC’s first exhibit (housed in a custom-made display case) is currently installed in the Lett Room at Hycroft. It features a black lace and gold silk Victorian reception dress, originally from Ireland. This beautifully tailored and beaded dress is the first poster-child for SMOC’s Adopt-An-Outfit campaign, which allows individuals and businesses to sponsor an outfit in need of careful restoration and TLC. With thanks to the University Women's Club of Vancouver, this display is permanent; the items exhibited will change regularly.

Since its installation, the display has generated much awe and attention – and SMOC hopes to keep the momentum going.

In July, SMOC will launch another satellite exhibit at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre in Burnaby, to be displayed until December 2013. A unique display of Japanese silks and clothing will welcome visitors to the centre. This coincides with SMOC’s special September show, which will feature traditional and contemporary Japanese costuming, textiles, and live fashion show.

Everyone is encouraged to visit both venues to catch a glimpse of SMOC’s truly eclectic and inspiring collection.

SMOC is a not-for-profit organization devoted to establishing a permanent museum for historical and ethnic costume and textiles in Vancouver. It offers an exciting schedule of educational fashion lectures, shows, and events complete with live models in original period dress. Our honorary curator is Ivan Sayers, SMOC co-founder and eminent Canadian costume historian.
