Richmond's treasures revealed at Doors Open 2013



Richmond, BC - Richmond residents and visitors will have the opportunity to explore unique arts, culture and heritage sites throughout Richmond, all for free, at the sixth annual Doors Open Richmond event taking place May 4 and 5. With a free map brochure, available in print or by PDF download, visitors can map their route based on geography, special interest or curiosity.

"Free access to art galleries, artist studios, heritage sites, museums, places of worship and green spaces will give everyone a rich opportunity for experience Richmond's arts, culture and heritage," says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. "Doors Open has become one of our most popular annual events and this year you can choose from nearly 50 locations to visit."

To begin the weekend of exploring Richmond's treasures, the opening celebration of the Steveston Tram Building located at 4011 Moncton Street (at No. 1 Road) will take place Friday, May 3 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

The celebration of the new Tram Building also marks the opening of Doors Open Richmond and Asian Heritage Month along with the 100-year birthday of the No. 1220 interurban tram. The event includes exhibits, refreshments, and live performances such as:



*         Steveston Taiko Drummers: opening ceremony kick-off.

*         Pecha-Kucha Night Richmond: thought provoking presentations by artists, architects, and heritage professionals, hosted by Rocanini Coffee Roasters at 3900 Moncton Street (across from the tram).

*         Jen Hodge's All Stars: a raucous, sassy jazz band reminiscent of the prohibition era of the '20s and '30s with its speakeasies, roadhouses and underground parties.

*         Heritage Performers: interactive performance in period costumes.



Make sure you include time in your Doors Open itinerary to visit some of the new sites added this year including the Helijet International Terminal and Hangar, the Steves Family Farmhouse, and Sea Island Firehall No. 4.

While the majority of the sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days, check the map brochure for times of operation. Doors Open map brochures are available at City facilities, including pools, arenas, community centres, and heritage sites, Richmond Nature Park, Richmond Cultural Centre and Richmond City Hall.
