Hello Heritage Colleagues,
Vancouver Heritage Foundation's once-a-year introduction to heritage
conservation course, Heritage 101, is being offered on Saturday May 11^th .
Heritage 101 offers a broad introduction to heritage conservation
practice, starting with a history of the built landscape of the Lower
Mainland over the last 100 years by Heritage Consultant, Don Luxton. The
course proceeds to cover how heritage practice evolved with Judy
Oberlander, Heritage Consultant and Educator, when various international
bodies came together when they realized that conserving heritage places
and sites needed a set of guidelines to both formalize and standardize
the practice. This course explains how we got to where we are, why
Canada and many municipalities have adopted the Standards and Guidelines
for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada as the guide for all
conservation practice, and the head of the Heritage Department at the
City of Vancouver, Marco D'Agostini, explains the current regulatory
environment affecting heritage buildings. The day includes two site
visits to learn about examining buildings for both their physical
condition and to sleuth out how they may have changed over time -- what
is original fabric, what has changed.
This course is a great introduction for people working with older
buildings to understand all of the regulatory environment and guidelines
that affect working with these structures. Demystify working through a
restoration project and understand why having a conservation plan with a
statement of significance will greatly improve your project's success,
authenticity and longevity.
Please feel welcome to share this message with colleagues and
connections that would benefit from this course. We are pleased to share
that a modified version of Heritage 101 was delivered for the City of
Richmond, and was so well received that 4 Richmond Heritage
Commissioners are attending the May 11^th workshop! /Thank you Richmond!/
Please feel welcome to give me a call to ask questions about the course.
Sincerely,
*Rebecca Bishop*
