Burnaby Village Museum has received three boxes of flash cards, teaching aids for arithmetic and reading. These were in use circa 1940 to 1954, if anyone has an educational program of that period they might be of interest. Or if by chance you have partial sets of these cards this may be your lucky day to fill in the gaps.
Here are the details:
Box of Addition flash cards. "SELF TEACHING / FLASH CARDS / No. 2135 / ADDITION / BY GARY CLEVELAND MYERS PHD/ . . . . / Kenworthy Educational Service / BUFFALO, N.Y. Printed in U.S.A." text on top of box. The box contains 104 cards
Box of "THE LAIDLAW CARDS /PICTURE, FORM, WORD / AND PHRASE CARDS". The set of cards is incomplete.
These cards are accessory materials for use with the Laidlaw Basic Readers by Yoakam, Gerald, M., Madeline Veverka and Louise Abney. The Laidlaw Basic Readers. Chicago, IL: Laidlaw Brothers. 1940, 8 vols.
Textbook; status: other; Reading; level: Gr. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; approved 1943. Textbook; status: basic; Reading; level: Gr. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; approved: 1944, 1945, 1946. Titles in series: Jack and Nancy at Home; On the Way to Storyland; Making Storybook Friends; Stories We Like; Children Everywhere; On the Trail of Adventure; The World Around Us; From Every Land. Source prior to 1944 cites this series as part of a "Minimum List of Classroom Library Books for Pupils' and Teachers' Use...". Accompanied by Reading Activity Workbooks, Maintenance and Functional Exercises for use with Laidlaw Basic Readers and Aids to Teaching Reading of the Laidlaw Series.
