Summer Employment Opportunity (Young Canada Works)

Mackie Lake House, Coldstream BC
Position: Archives Assistant 

Would you like to be an archive detective who uncovers the hidden secrets of
our large and undocumented photo collection? The Mackie Lake House
Foundation is seeking a temporary (summer) full-time (35 hrs/wk) Archives
Assistant. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Inventory the existing collection of photographs in the Mackie Lake House.
Proper procedures for handling the photographic materials with white cotton
gloves, protecting the photographs using archival envelopes and proper
storage techniques will be part of your day to day experience.

 

Develop and execute a strategy for identification of our photographs and
production of a database to catalogue our collection. Complete arrangement &
description of historically-significant fonds, including researching and
processing, arranging and describing, according to Archival best practices,
and loading completed findings to the database. 

 

Scan and digitize photos for the Archives’ collection, including scanning,
editing (Photoshop), saving images in our Access 2010 Photograph database,
describing images according to RAD (Rules for Archival Description).

 

Work under the supervision of our Foundation archivist and Mackie Lake House
Foundation manager regarding all aspects of the project.

Qualifications 
The candidate must fulfill all eligibility requirements of the YCW Program,
including registration on the YCW web site.  

Ideally, the candidate will have completed at least 1 year of undergraduate
study in a relevant subject field (i.e. History) and will have some
experience as a volunteer, student intern or employee in a related field.
The candidate should have an expressed interest in working in Archives.

The candidate must have experience working with a PC computer and be
computer-literate. (Prefer prior experience working with Photoshop, Access
2010, and scanning processes and procedures).


Strong organizational and time management skills are required.

 

An ability to work independently, and as part of a team should be
demonstrated.

 

The candidate may be in a position to work with the public, and may require
a background criminal records check.


Term of Employment 
27 May through 30 August 2013; Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm, with
a half-hour unpaid lunch (occasional Saturday or Sunday may be required). 
Rate of Pay: $12.50 hour
