Who: Vernon Public Art Gallery

The Vernon Public Art Gallery is excited to showcase four new exhibitions as
of Thursday, May 30th, all of which are produced by Okanagan based artists.

“The graduates from the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree program at UBCO exhibit
at the Vernon Public Art Gallery annually. We receive a wide variety of art
submissions; printmaking, sculpture, photography, installation, and new
media. This year painting is the predominant medium. Large scale paintings
of abstract and mixed media works, with an emphasis on contemporary art
practices and production of meaning distilled from the information laden
mass media daily presence. ”

“Julia Prudhome is also a graduate of UBCO in the Master of Fine Arts
program, and the exhibition she produced also happens to be her final
thesis. The Gallery continues to see a strong base of emerging artists from
the educational institutions in the area, including artist in residency
programs, which is also featured in our upcoming exhibition schedule. VPAG
offers exhibition opportunities from the community level to internationally
recognized artists. It’s great to see Okanagan artists come full circle, and
return to Vernon to exhibit here at the Gallery.” Said Lubos Culen, Curator.

2013 UBCO BFA Graduation Exhibition: Continuum, May 30 – July 25, 2013

The Gallery annually hosts the UBC Okanagan BFA Graduation Exhibition, in an
effort to create exhibition opportunities for a group of emerging artists.
The artwork in the exhibition titled Continuum, reference tendencies,
concepts, and strategies in contemporary art making. This group exhibition
features a diversity of media, including large-scale paintings and drawings,
sculptural installations, printmaking and video. The exhibition was juried
by the members of the Department of Creative Studies at the UBC - Okanagan.

Julia Prudhomme: Just Passing Through, May 30 – July 25, 2013

Julia Prudhomme is currently a Master of Fine Arts student at UBC Okanagan
with a focus on photography and video installation. Her final thesis
exhibition titled Just Passing Through explores the performed female body as
scripted by social conventions. Prudhomme's work is essentially a
self-conscious process of layering, which primarily uses herself as an
anonymous medium to embody certain female enigmas kept secret - female
mysteries - by etiquette rules, ritualized ceremonies, and popular culture.
She wears the personae of characters who walk the line between imagined
reality and social fiction held within collective memory; a notion further
asserted by Avital Ronell's fable as being a true fiction concerned with
origins that is hidden in full view of society. This exhibition attempts to
explore these themes on a local, place-minded scale through the fabrication
of a composite character named LuLu Miller. Lulu haunts/exists in hotel
rooms along Highway 97, mixing maternal family stories and archival media
with a meticulously documented first-degree murder trial and Harold Pinter's
stage play, The Birthday Party. Prudhomme mingles reality and fiction in
order to express the imposed and assumed modalities of being.

Petula Pettman: Flowers and Tears, May 30 – July 25, 2013
The Vernon Public Art Gallery is proud to present the work of Petula
Pettman, a West Kelowna based artist with a prolific studio practice of
stone carving. She apprenticed under the guidance of her father and artist
Clifford Pettman who introduced her to the various carving techniques and
the knowledge of different types of stones. Pettman’s artistic practice now
spans nearly three decades, and her work is in many corporate and private
collections around the world. Primarily sculpting in stone, Pettman produced
a body of stone sculptures for this exhibition with narratives which
reference nature, spiritual values, and her Métis cultural background. Her
approach to stone carving results in lyrical compositions with a strong
emotional and spiritual undertones and the clarity of sculptural forms.

Mackie Lake House Artist in Residency: James Postill: Hidden Treasures, May
27 – June 28, 2013
The Vernon Public Art Gallery in partnership with the Mackie Lake House
Foundation present an exhibition of paintings produced by James Postill
during the artist-in-residence program at the historic Mackie House situated
in Coldstream BC above Kalamalka Lake. Established in 2010, the Mackie Lake
House Foundation started artist-in-residence program, and Postill is the
fourth visual artist creating artwork on site in 2013. Previous artists
participating in the program were Victoria BC based artist Angie Francis in
2010, Edmonton based Edie McIntyre in 2011, and Ottawa based Joyce Devlin in
2012.
