The Multicultural Foods in B.C. – Photo Contest and Exhibition, hosted by the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver, will launch its opening ceremony this coming Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013 2:00pm. The aim of this contest and exhibition is to bring together participants of different ethnic backgrounds and facilitate intercultural exchange through their diverse food photos.
The food photo contest received one hundred and thirty-four submissions from participants of all ethnic backgrounds. The submissions are diverse and plentiful, including: multinational gourmet foods, desserts, Aboriginal delicacies, homemade foods of children, scenes from community gardens, etc. Through these photos we can see the creativity and the love for multicultural foods of each photographer.
The food photo contest’s jury committee has selected out of the submissions, three winning photos: Frist Prize Corn by Jina Kim. Second Prize Grapefruit Cured Salmon by Francis Dorsemaine, Third Prize Terra Nova Community Garden by Melissa Kolling, as well as ten honourable mentions. A total of eighty six photos will be included in the exhibition. There will be prizes handed out the day of the ceremony for all honourable mentions, as well as cash prizes for the three winners. Also included in the exhibition are new media piece: Van Gogh’s Colour, Frangrance and Taste by local artist Sophi Liang, illustrated recipes of Chinese cuisine by celebrity chef Gigi Wong and Forms Publications (HK) Co. Ltd., and the new book Eating Stories: A Chinese Canadian & Aboriginal Potluck published by the Chinese Canadian Historical Society.
This project received the support from City of Vancouver. The partners of this project include Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival, Cinevolution Media Arts Society, Richmond Food Security Society, and the Vancouver Hanfu Culture Society. This project received generous sponsorship from Mr. Jianchun Chen and Newstar Enterprises Intl. Ltd.
On Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at 2:00pm, the Richmond Food Security Society will provide a lecture on food security titled Good Food and Food Fortunes: Food Security in Migrant Communities for all interested participants. The lecture will be conducted in English by the CEO of the Richmond Food Security Society, Colin Dring, who will also answer any questions regarding food security so that everyone may benefit from safer food.
