A Navy Wren in the 60s: One Woman's Perspective

[cid:image003.jpg at 01CEE544.BE949B30]Sitting at the top of her staircase as a child, hearing her father tell the stories of his many adventures as a navy officer, Gwen Settle promised herself she would join the Canadian Navy too. Little could Officer WAN02 Gwendolyn Settle have known that making such a promise, and following through with it, would end up being best the decision she made in her life.

Gwen Settler will share her remarkable stories of growing up as a young woman abroad serving for the Canadian Navy from 1962 to 1965 at The Reach on December 4th from 1:00 to 2:00pm. This lecture is free to the public and is part of The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford's ongoing Living History series, where people share their incredible stories with the community. Gwen's talk celebrates what service as a woman in the Navy was like, a topic well explored through the visual art exhibited at The Reach currently until January 5, 2013, The Navy: A Century in Art, a traveling show from the Canadian War Museum. Listen as Gwen shares her experiences serving in Key West, Florida during the Cold War years - a girl, in her own words: "having a great experience, doing what [she] loved."
