Museums and other heritage and arts organizations rely on thoughtful business planning and effective financial management to achieve their goals. This course is designed to provide you with a set of planning and analysis documents that you will be able to integrate into your organization. We will address the challenges faced in developing mission-led, financially-sustainable cultural organizations and explore the opportunities for advancing new business practices and funding sources.
Through this course, you will explore:
* the nature and values of not-for-profit cultural organizations
* business planning as a framework for setting goals, priorities, and strategies
* financial management cycles, budgeting, and resource allocation - forecasting revenues and expenditures
* internal controls, evaluation, and audit legal and ethical issues
* using financial information for effective grant writing
Registration Deadline: December 9, 2013, late registrations are accepted if space permits. You can take this course on a non-credit basis, or complete it for Diploma, Exploratory Studies, or transfer credit. If you aren't currently admitted to UVic for credit, we can advise you on the best approach, depending upon your interests and needs.

Fee: CAD $705.36 (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options) including a CAD$75 materials fee and a CAD$100 tuition/registration deposit is required with each registration form. About the Instructor:
Robert Bradford was born in Camrose and has since lived in more places than most military kids. He has a Bachelor of Music Performance from North Park University, Chicago. He is also a Certified General Accountant working for the provincial government. He spent many years working in various not-for-profit organizations, spending eight years as the Controller for Edmonton Opera. Robert enjoys dispelling myths and helping Arts and Cultural Management students discover the joys and fun of accounting!

The Cultural Resource Management Program offers on-campus and distance education courses for professionals, volunteers and board members in museums, galleries, heritage sites, cultural centres and related organizations. Courses are designed to address the emerging needs of the sector and build your personal and organizational capacity.
In our courses, you interact with colleagues from across North America and beyond, participate in stimulating learning activities, and relate your learning to the practical issues and realities of your workplace and community. Courses are taught by instructors who are leading professionals in the field.
Courses can be taken individually or towards a comprehensive diploma or focused professional specialization certificate. Individual credit and non-credit course registration options are also available. Choose the program and / or course best suited to meet your needs from the flexible options available.
