Remembrance Day Exhibit 

Remembrance Day on Bowen is always special. I am certain this year will be no exception. The service is thoughtful, well attended, and moving. The number of individuals and organizations who lay wreaths at the cenotaph remind us of how the wars touched the lives of many people, in many different ways. 

It is a privilege for us to commemorate Remembrance Day, a day when Canadians across the country join with veterans to remember those who fought in the last two world wars, and more recent conflicts. Together, we remember their sacrifices. Please stop by the museum after the Ceremony at the cenotaph and discover how the World Wars touched the lives of families on Bowen Island. We are open November 11th  from 11:30 to 4:00. As well, we are open from 11:30 to 4:00 on November 11th.

 Tools to Write Truth like a Sleuth

The volunteers and staff of the Bowen Island Museum and Archives have been working hard behind the scenes to organize an oral history writing workshop. Attendees of this writing workshop will learn to apply the elements of story structure to gathered memories from interviews, transcripts, and research to enhance the building of a factual family tree.

Last January, we hosted an “Oral History Workshop” with great success! Attendees of the workshop learned the art of creating oral history conversations. In keeping with this theme, we will be hosting “Oral History – Tools to Write like a Truth Sleuth” on Sunday, November 3rd, from 1 to 4 p.m. and we invite the public to join us. This workshop will be led by Patricia Koretchuk, author of “Chasing the Comet: A Scottish-Canadian Life”. Koretchuk believes the writing of oral history is a magic collaboration that transforms private, personal oral stories into an accessible published works. Her goals are to entrance and educate her readers through interviewing and writing about “ordinary” people. She builds, using the elements of story to construct oral memoirs. She researches interview information, checking facts, times and settings, detecting missing elements. She proves informants to reveal commonly-shared core emotions that connect us all. She digs for unconsciously-hidden themes within lifestyles. This “Truth Sleuth” is happy that her work has helped re-create lives and times, making them accessible to all.

Island Pacific School

The Museum & Archives will be partnering with Island Pacific School (IPS) as part of their Community Service Program. IPS students will visit the Museum and Archives five times over the school year volunteering their time and will learn the value of their Bowen history.

The students will focus their energy on a digitization program. We are very excited to be able to offer this program as students will be taking a trip up to Simon Fraser University to use a digitization lab. A huge thank you to Jack Little and Simon Fraser University for making this opportunity happen!

We are very fortunate to be able to offer the students such an opportunity and hope that we can continue building connections such as this with our community.

Teddy Bears return to museum

The "Beary Merry" Christmas exhibit will be back this year. Some of our favourite bears will return - Winnie the Pooh and Paddington.  Featured this year is a completely new display created by Shirley Wrinch - "A Bear for all Seasons".
Do you have a bear that you would like to have in the display over Christmas? Give us a call or send us an email.

We will be serving hot apple cider and cookies on our special opening day, December 23 from 1:00 - 3:00.  The exhibit will be up over the holidays on December 23, 24, 27-31 from 1:00 - 3:00.  We hope you will visit with family and friends.
