The Fraser River Discovery Centre Presents: My River My Home

New Westminster, BC – A new exhibit has the Fraser River Discovery Centre
going global. My River My Home will display artwork from children around the
world to accompany information about other major river basins across the
planet, including the Congo, the Ganges, the Amazon, and our very own
Fraser.

My River My Home is one of three new exhibits that will be unveiled at the
Grand Opening of the Fraser River Discovery Centre’s second floor at noon on
Saturday, September 28 during RiverFest: Inspired by the Fraser, the
Discovery Centre’s celebration of BC and World Rivers Day. It will remain at
the Fraser River Discovery Centre until July 2015.

The exhibit’s origin lies in a research project conducted by scientists at
the Global Rivers Observatory, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute
(WHOI), and the Woods Hole Research Center initiative. Researchers are
working with partners around the world to study the role of rivers in the
changing global ocean systems. My River My Home first took shape when Anya
Suslova, the 13-year-old daughter of a sampling boat captain in Siberia,
volunteered to continue to collect water samples. Her classmates began to
create artwork in response to the project and it soon became a collaborative
effort between students, teachers, and scientists to obtain river water
samples as well as drawings, paintings, and crafts.

The exhibit will showcase artwork from students who live in riversheds as
far away as Siberia and right here in the Fraser, including a piece from
Richard McBride student Jaden Joseph, the overall winner for the Fraser.
Other panels will display updated information about the research project,
interviews with the researchers, and facts about the major river basins.
Each region will be depicted through striking photographs taken by Chris
Linder, the lead photographer and filmmaker for the Global Rivers
Observatory.

Visitors to the Fraser River Discovery Centre will be able to conduct their
own experiments testing the water quality of various samples and create
colourful microscopic slides that will become part of an art installation
called Altered Rivers. In addition, they will have access to an art studio
where they can create new pieces to be added to the exhibit and displayed
alongside international artwork. The Fraser River Discovery Centre hopes
these interactive elements will make My River My Home a personal experience
for everyone and bring to light the connections between visitors past and
present.

“The Fraser River is really put into a global perspective in this exhibit,”
explains Exhibit Coordinator Kathleen Bertrand. “In researching this
exhibit, I got a much clearer understanding of how my actions here in New
Westminster connect me to someone who lives in the Congo or in the Ganges.”

My River My Home is the result of a partnership between the Fraser River
Discovery Centre, the University of the Fraser Valley, the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institute, and the Woods Hole Research Centre. It is sponsored
by the Government of BC, the Pacific Salmon Foundation, the City of New
Westminster and the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.

The Fraser River Discovery Centre is an interpretive centre connecting
communities in the discovery and celebration of the living, working Fraser
River. Located along the Westminster boardwalk at 788 Quayside Drive, New
Westminster, the Discovery Centre is open 10:00am to 4:00pm, Wednesday to
