Grinding flour with a small (18") stone mill using belt power from the steam machine would be a crowd pleaser, and you could also sell the flour. I did it at the Interior Provincial Exhibition in partnership with a 5 HP gas engine from the local pioneer power club, and it was so successful that the club got their own grinder for their own future use. There are wonderful flour mill histories in every community so you could make a local link easily. Check out the floating flour mill that once worked on the Fraser. It used a steam engine to power the paddle wheels for mobility, and then to power the on-board grinder.
When you are ready for a flour miller, let me know!

Subject: [BCMA] BVM Steam demonstrations
Burnaby Village Museum has offered live steam demonstrations for a number of years. That is, we have had our engines turning over and being suitably steamy.
This is all well and good. But - we do have to contend with the perennial question from the public:
What do they actually do?
We have belted one engine to a large sharpening stone. This does not seem to impress the audience over much.
For our upcoming Christmas season we thought lighting up a Christmas tree might be more impressive.
In order to do this we would need a generator we can belt to our steam engine. We are thinking along the lines of a Delco farm generator or a similar industrial generator.
So, first question - Does anyone have an operating or close to operating generator they would like to de-accession or loan?
Or, baring a "Yes" answer to the above question - Does anyone have a better suggestion?
Any input will be welcome. We are trying to be as authentic as possible.
