It is with deep regret that we announce the cancellation of SMOC’s Bal Masque Gala 2013 on October 24
We are deeply disappointed, as the annual gala has been a favourite of members for many years.

The cancellation of the gala impacts the future of SMOC as the revenues generated have historically served to support SMOC’s work during the ensuing twelve months. This year, the Board was able to introduce a number of new initiatives and exciting events such as Adopt-An-Outfit, travel tours, satellite exhibits and initial steps have been taken to create an online virtual museum.

At this time, our Honorary Curator, Ivan Sayers, dedicates regular hours each week to work with and mentor curatorial assistants.  We’re delighted to be able to contract paid interns for the first time this summer, which has been a milestone for SMOC.

The most significant factor that led to the decision to cancel the Gala is a lack of volunteers to execute the program.  As you are aware, SMOC regularly attempts to recruit volunteers via social media, newsletter, website, and volunteer message boards for skilled and capable supporters to join the organization. Our call for Gala Committee members was never answered.

SMOC is not extinct. We’d love to hear from people who want to see SMOC’s enlightening and entertaining events continue for years to come.  Would-be Committee members are invited to contact us, with a statement of interest, at info at smoc.ca (mailto:info at smoc.ca) . Please note that a CV or resume would be appreciated.

We will ensure that pre-purchased ticket-holders will receive refunds within the next 30 – 60 days.

In place of the gala, SMOC will hold A Masquerade Parade: From Venice to the Catwalk October 20, 2013 at Hycroft, 1:00 pm to 4:00 p.m. Pricing for this event is our regular pricing: $20 for members/$22 for non-members/$10 for students; tickets are available online at http://ocms.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=08a2cfa55acaa2eb1d8f0651e&id=040a4a7036&e=e453d6a3cb. For those who have already purchased tickets, you have the option to donate the value of your gala tickets to SMOC; a tax-deductible receipt will be issued.
