POSITION OVERVIEW
Located in the heart of the beautiful Fraser Valley, the Chilliwack Museum
and Archives is operated by the Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society
from two main sites in historic downtown Chilliwack: the head office and
exhibition centre at the Chilliwack City Hall National Historic Site of
Canada, and the collection and archives research centre at Evergreen Hall.
Since its inception in 1958, the Chilliwack Museum and Archives has
developed one of the largest and most important local history collections in
the Valley.
The Chilliwack Museum and Archives is currently seeking a dedicated museum
professional and collections management specialist to contribute their
knowledge and creativity to the position of full-time Curator. Reporting to
the Director, the Curator will work collaboratively as a member of a small
and effective team.
Guided by the organization's policies, procedures, annual goals and
objectives, the Curator's primary responsibilities will include the
acquisition, documentation, storage, preventative conservation, research,
interpretation, exhibition, and promotion of the organization's collection
of artifacts. Additional responsibilities will include developing a working
familiarity with the organization's archival collection, supporting the
day-to-day operation of the public research centre, and providing support
for public and education programs. Occasional weekend and evening work may
be required.
QUALIFICATIONS
. Required - Master's degree in museum studies, anthropology, history, or
other related field, or a bachelor's degree in a related field with
additional related education, training, and experience.
. Preferred - Minimum of 5 years experience working in museums, in a
position of responsibility related to collections management and/or
exhibition development.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
. Knowledge of best practice in museum operations, particularly in relation
to collections management, exhibition development, and preventative
conservation.
. Demonstrated interest in material culture and social history.
. General knowledge of the history of Chilliwack, British Columbia, and
Canada, including Canada's First Nations.
. Demonstrated interest in maintaining an awareness of current issues and
trends in historical research and museological practice.
. Experience working collaboratively in the development of museum and/or
community partnerships.
. Supervisory experience, including providing training for students and
volunteers.
. Grant writing experience will be considered an asset.
APTITUDES, ABILITIES & SKILLS
. Creative ability to develop well-researched curatorial projects that
communicate effectively to a wide audience.
. Good general computer skills and working familiarity with museum
collections management database programs.
. Knowledge of PastPerfect will be considered an asset.
. General knowledge of photography standards.
. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the self-motivation to work
independently and the flexibility to work collaboratively with others.
. Good people skills with a customer/community service orientation.
. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to
create materials for publication and public presentation.
. Excellent organization and time management skills.
. Strong attention to detail.
. Ability to work on a ladder and to lift and move items weighing 40 lbs.
. Curiosity, creativity, imagination, and a good sense of humour will be
considered welcome assets.
