PRESS RELEASE - For Immediate Release

April 29, 2014

New Westminster, BC – In 1991, the Fraser River Discovery Centre Society
established the Fraser River Hall of Fame to recognize and honour
individuals or organizations that have made significant and noteworthy
contributions to the health and sustainability of the Fraser River, its
culture, people, industry and environment. This year, the society is proud
to induct BC and World Rivers Day founder and chair, Mark Angelo into the
Fraser River Hall of Fame.

Joining an esteem list of past recipients, Angelo was nominated for his
decades of passionate and articulate advocacy for waterways throughout the
province of British Columbia, Canada and the world, and specifically for his
work here at home on the Fraser River.

Over the past four decades Angelo has played a leadership role in numerous
river conservation and restoration initiatives. Projects, numbering in the
hundreds, have ranged from the successful restoration of heavily damaged
urban streams such as Guichon Creek in Burnaby and Still Creek in Vancouver,
to one of the most important conservation initiatives in all of the Canada –
the “Heart of the Fraser” campaign, and dynamic initiative to conserve the
enormous ecological values of one of the most productive stretches of the
Lower Fraser River. Angelo’s latest project River Blue, a feature-length
documentary which speaks passionately about the need to protect all rivers
and entailed a round-the-world journey, is due in theatres later this year.

As founder and chair of both BC Rivers Day and World Rivers Day, an event
now embraced by millions of people in more than 60 countries, Angelo has
served as the first non-government provincial representative and Chair of
the Canadian Heritage Rivers Board and the inaugural Chair of the BC
Heritage River System. As Rivers Chair for the Outdoor Recreational Council
of BC, Angelo coordinated the compilation of BC’s annual “most endangered
rivers”, which provides a snapshot of the issues and threats that face BC’s
rivers and their ecological health.

“Mr. Angelo’s passion and dedication for rivers all over the world is vast
and inspiring. His work right here at home is exceptional and most deserving
of the Fraser River Hall of Fame honour. For decades Mr. Angelo has directed
his effort to the restoration and conservation of creeks and streams, as
well as major rivers of the Fraser River Basin, applying the same unending
passion and inspiring dedication each and every time. His work yields
results and continuity by engaging partners and champions”, says Catherine
Ouellet-Martin, Executive Director for the Fraser River Discovery Centre.

In recognition of his river conservation efforts, Angelo has been honoured
by an array of governments, community groups, professional bodies and
indigenous communities, both in Canada and aboard. Among his numerous
awards, he has received Canada’s highest honour, the Order of Canada, the
inaugural United Nations International Year of Fresh Water Stewardship
Award, the Order of British Columbia, the National River Conservation Award
and in 2009 an honorary doctorate from Simon Fraser University. In 2011, he
was awarded with a special lifetime achievement award by the BCIT Alumni and
Foundation, the prestigious Land Champion Award from the Real Estate
Foundation of BC, and was honored the title Chair Emeritus of the Rivers
Institute. And more recently he was awarded the Barsby Trophy, the highest
honour the BC Wildlife Federation can bestow on any individual for an
outstanding contribution to conservation.

Angelo will be inducted into the Fraser River Hall of Fame at a ceremony on
Thursday, November 6, 2014 at the Discovery Centre overlooking the Mighty
Fraser during an evening of fine food and wine, cocktails and refreshments.
The annual Fraser River Hall of Fame celebration evening has become an
anticipated event by the River community and a social highlight of the year.
