PUBLIC AUCTION is usually best as staff cannot be accused of spiriting away items inappropriately to their homes.
If items had sentimental value to the donors (e.g. Granddad's chair) you can offer them back to the donors as long as tax receipts had not been issued. Actually one could offer them back but the tax people would want their "pound of flesh."
