Free Family Day and more February events at the Royal BC Museum
Monday Feb 10
Free BC Family Day
Spend Family Day exploring the Royal BC Museum! Learn new things about
wildlife with special nature-themed activities. Identify bones, take part in
a scavenger hunt, sketch in the Natural History gallery, dress-up, get a
photo taken and have fun with habitat.
Self-guided activities 10 am - 5 pm. Guided activities 1pm - 3pm.
Admission to the Royal BC Museum is FREE all day on BC Family Day.
(Does not apply to IMAX Victoria Theatre)
Or come to the Royal BC Museum during Heritage Week, Feb 17 - 23.
Sunday Feb 16
Friends of the BC Archives Lecture - Victorias Black History
At the invitation of Governor James Douglas several hundred Black settlers
arrived from California to farm and pursue other occupations on Vancouver
Island in 1858. Douglas himself was a free coloured boy at birth in what
became British Guiana (now Guyana). Did his background influence him in
later years? Who were the Blacks who came and why did they come? John Adams,
Victoria-based historian, heritage interpreter and author of several books
will answer these questions and share other interesting insights on
Victorias Black pioneers.
Royal BC Museum, Newcombe Conference Hall, 2pm 3:30pm.
Tickets $5 at the door. (Free for members of the Friends of the BC Archives)

Behind the Scenes Tours
See for yourself where those jars, boxes and bins are kept and experience
the behind-the-scenes working environment of our talented researchers and
staff.
Behind the Scenes Tour #1: Butterflies and More, Noon -12:30 pm
Behind the Scenes Tour #2: Fossils, 1 pm -1:30 pm
Behind the Scenes Tour #3: Museum Alchemy: The Art of Setting the Stage,
2pm - 2:30pm
Tour #3, Museum Alchemy takes visitors underground to the exhibit arts
studio and multi-media lab where new technology and age-old craft come
together to create an immersive museum experience.
Behind the Scenes Tours are limited to 10 people and are included with
museum admission or membership.
Sign up begins 1 hour prior to the tour start time.
These tours are designated as Canadian Signature Experiences by the Canadian
Tourism Commission.

Swap Café: Language, Identity and Culture
Should the Museums labels and signs be presented in another language? If so
whose?
Join a discussion inspired by International Mother Languages Day. Consider
the importance of language preservation and what is happening now to keep
First Nations languages alive in British Columbia. A hands-on way to learn,
a SWAP Café is more than a lecture. Round table discussions come to life
after four special panelists stimulate reflection and inspire new thoughts
and ideas. Participants input helps shape the evening and creates a unique
experience.
Royal BC Museum, Newcombe Conference Hall, 7pm - 9pm.
Tickets $5, available online or at the door. 10% museum member discount.

Wonder Sunday: Towns
For this Wonder Sunday the Royal BC Museum connects to other museums
throughout British Columbia. Hear what kids around the province think about
the place they call home, while doing activities sent from towns near and
far. Be an inventor (Smithers), create a display (Terrace), be part of a
quiz show (Prince George), create a mini town (Chilliwack) and much more.
Included with membership or admission, these activities are available from 1
pm - 3 pm.
Monday Feb 24
65 million years of pre-history
This paleolecture covers dinosaurs from the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary to
the Upper Cretaceous of the Peace Region of British Columbia. Richard T.
McCrea and Lisa Buckley, Curators at the Peace Region Paleontology Research
Centre will present results of research on tracks and skeletal finds from
the Mesozoic of northeastern British Columbia. They will talk about the
recovery by helicopter of British Columbias first complete dinosaur in the
summer of 2013 and the realization that the dinosaur excavation site is a
bonebed. Other topics will include dinosaur tracksites in BC including the
newly discovered Dinosaur Gorge from the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary.
This gorge contains the northernmost records of sauropods as well as one of
the oldest records of avians in the world.
Royal BC Museum, Clifford Carl Hall, 7pm - 8:30 pm.
