Interpretive Coordinator



The Maritime Museum of British Columbia (located in Victoria, BC) seeks an Interpretive Coordinator to join our team. This position is responsible for developing and managing programming that supports and fulfills the museum's mission to "promote and preserve the maritime experience and heritage of BC and to engage people with this ongoing story." The Interpretive Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring an exceptional visitor experience at the Maritime. This position reports directly to the Director of Exhibits and Visitor Engagement.





Primary Responsibilities:

*         Create, plan, and coordinate  programs for adults (with assistance from membership coordinator)

*         Create, plan, and manage on-site and off-site programming for families, youth and other target audiences as identified by the Museum;

*         Manage and develop school tour and docent program, including training and scheduling volunteer docents / tour guides and delivering tours as needed;

*         Schedule and book tours at the Museum;

*         Accurately track and report program numbers and expenditures;

*         Liaise with educators and other community groups;

*         Work with Director of Exhibits and Visitor Engagement on exhibit development and planning, including, but not limited to, development of interactive components for exhibits and ensuring exhibits appeal to a wide variety of visitors' needs;

*         Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop programming around permanent and temporary exhibits;

*         Research content and recommend programming for object and exhibition interpretation; and

*         Assist with exhibition design, installation and maintenance on an as-needed basis.





Qualifications:

*         BA in History, English, Education or Museum Studies; MA preferred, but not required.

*         Minimum 1-2 years experience working in a museum, or educational/cultural organization.

*         Excellent written and verbal communication skills; must have the ability to lead engaging tours to a wide variety of audiences from children to seniors.

*         Excellent organizational skills.

*         Ability to develop imaginative and creative programs that stimulate interest and engage learners of all ages.

*         Intellectual curiosity about maritime heritage and its interdisciplinary connections.

*         Ability to represent the Maritime in a professional manner.

*         Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

*         Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.

*         Ability to adapt to new situations, multi-task, be creative and have a sense of humour is also important.

*         Access to a vehicle is an asset, but not required, as some programming takes place off-site.

Compensation:

$18 / hr; 35 hours per week; and eligible for competitive benefits package after six months. Anticipated start date is March 26, 2014.
