Seasonal Full-Time Museum Interpreters for Chinatown Interpretation Program

Available Positions: Two.  Time Period: May-September 2014.
Wage/Salary: 16.00/hour (Plus 4% Vacation Pay) plus benefits.
Work Load: 7 hours/day x 5 days/week x 20 weeks.

Location: Barkerville Historic Town, Barkerville, BC V0K 1B0, Canada.

Job Description:
Acting as either an early 20th century Chinese merchant, merchant’s daughter, Chinese private school teacher or a contemporary archaeologist,  the interpreters will introduce tourists and students to the rich history of Chinatown in Barkerville between the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. The positions entail:
-conducting walking tours of Chinatown
-teaching introductory Chinese language and culture classes in Chinatown’s Chinese School
-introducing major archeological findings from Chinatown and demonstrating Chinese arts,
 crafts, music, sports, games, and medicine during the Chinese Culture Sessions
-maintaining garden and taking care of chickens in Chinatown
-patrolling Chinatown and greeting and assisting tourists and students
-assisting in preparing and conducting the Chinese festival on August 16, 2014.

Job Requirements:
-Must have either Canadian citizenship, Permanent Resident Card or valid Work Permit
-Age 18 years or older
-Proficiency in spoken English and Chinese, if playing a Chinese role.
-Having a BA degree or taking an undergraduate degree of Social science
-Knowledge of the Chinese history and culture
-Knowledge of history of western Canada
-Ability to work professionally with tourists and students of multi-cultural backgrounds
-Ability to work well with other team members and workers in other programs in Barkerville
-Having a valid driving license
*A criminal background check will be conducted.

Preferred:
-Experience of working in museum setting(s)
-Experience of working in tourism setting(s)
-Working experience or knowledge of archaeology
-Knowledge or practice of Chinese arts, crafts, performing arts, martial arts, or medicine.
