Hello everyone,

The Nanaimo Museum has four community announcements for March 2014:

Speaker Series #1 - Land of Heart's Delight

March 4, 2014 1:30pm

Just how, and why, did Vancouver Island get onto the map? How was
knowledge of our immediate geography acquired and recorded? Michael
Layland will present a talk about his new book, The Land of Heart's
Delight; Early Maps and Charts of Vancouver Island. The book relates the
stories behind some 130 maps of the island dating between 1593 and 1915
- before the arrival of Europeans through to the start of the First
World War. The author will tell of his researches and what he discovered
in the process. He will illustrate his talk with a few examples of maps
included in the book. Copies of the book will be available for sale, and
signed if requested.

Speaker Series #2 - Captain G.H. Richards and the Vancouver Island
Survey

March 12, 2014 1:00pm

Most people in Nanaimo are familiar with Mt. Benson, Mt. Moriarty, Mudge
Island, De Courcy Island, Bowen Island and Galiano Island. What they
may not know is that these and many other places were officially named
by Cpt. G.H. Richards of the Royal Navy between 1857 and 1863. Richards
and his crew were nautical surveyors and were tasked with surveying and
charting the waters around Vancouver Island. Based on details from
Richards' own journal, this presentation will consider Richards as
surveyor, and his and his crews' contribution to our local history.

Presenters: Linda Dorricott and Deidre Cullon, editors of "The Private
Journal of Captain G.H. Richards: The Vancouver Island Survey
(1860-1862)."
