The tree evokes myriad myths and memories. In an exhibition curated by Alison Keenan and Phyllis Schwartz, eight mid-career international artists re-examine the mythologies and metaphorical elements of the tree.

The Tree: Literal and Figurative opens at the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum (555 Columbia Street, Vancouver, B.C. Canada Tel.604-658-8880) on 11 January 2014 from 2-4pm and runs through 16 February 2014. Hours of Opening: Tuesday –Sunday, 11 am-5pm. Admission is free on Tuesdays.

Eight artists working in eight different media include the paintings of Alison Keenan, experimental photography by Phyllis Schwartz, drawings by Anna Ruth and Tony Chu Yin Tak, large scale photography by Edward Peck, ceramics by Pauline Doyle, felt sculpture by Ellen Bang and installation work by Connie Sabo.

Alison Keenan’s painting position the tree as one would look up through a canopy of branches at night while experimental photographer Phyllis Schwartz uses the lumen print process to produce poetic images of New York City plant life.

Anna Ruth, a Canadian artist now living in Finland, draws the tree with its roots held high, a minimalist and poetic drawing above a scattering of birch leaves on the gallery floor, and Connie Sabo, an installation artist, creates a site-specific large installation of recycled paper challenging issues of sustainability in the changing environment.

Edward Peck`s large scale photographs focus on the industrial elements found in warehouses and construction sites while Tony Chu Yin Tak creates dense forests floating on voluminous transparent paper.

Ellen Bang’s felt sculptures addresses the sense of alienation felt in a big city where the tree represents a highly reduced aspect of modern life, and ceramic artist Pauline Doyle refers to the tree as the Ark, a place offering shelter and inspiration.

A cross-cultural exhibition between the Chinese-Canadian community and the exhibiting artists comes together with a series of art tours, workshops for schools and drawing demonstrations. See Chinese Cultural Centre’s website for further details. http://www.cccvan.com/#!blogger-feed/c186k
