Call for Artists for Field Trip Project

The Maritime Museum of British Columbia is accepting proposals from artists for participation in the Field Trip Project. The exhibition is scheduled for June 19 - September 8, 2014 at the Maritime Museum in Victoria, BC.

The Field Trip Project is a mobile / participatory / interactive art exhibition installed within Japanese elementary school backpacks. We will be looking to select a variety of artists (from emerging to established) and we would like to have representation from all parts of our diverse British Columbian coast and inland waters.

History of project:

On March 11, 2011 a massive 9.0 earthquake rocked the sea floor off the coast of Japan. A 40m high tsunami was generated and travelled inland up to 10km creating massive devastation in Japanese coastal communities.

At the end of the school year in March 2012 a number of unused relief supplies stored in backpacks gathered in the gymnasium of Onagawa Daiichi Junior High School. The backpacks and supplies were scheduled either to be shipped to developing countries or to be treated as waste. A large number of backpacks were entrusted to Toronto-based visual artist Daisuke Takeya and Onagawa-based art teacher Chie Kajiwara and 70 backpacks were sent to Canadian and Japanese artists to transform them into a mobile art exhibition. In June 2014 these backpacks will be exhibited at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia.

In addition to the existing backpacks, the Maritime now invites artists from west coast communities in and around British Columbia to participate in this project and transform a new Japanese elementary school backpack for display at the Maritime Museum during the period of June 19 - September 8, 2014. The exhibit will illustrate - through art - the interconnectedness of our cultures across the Pacific Ocean and the impact this tsunami has had in Japan as well as here on our British Columbian shores with regard to the threat of debris and invasive species arriving on the strong ocean currents.

Eligibility:

We are looking to select ten individual artists for participation. We hope to have representation from a variety of artists (from emerging to established) and as well as representation from all communities of our diverse British Columbian coast.

* If selected, artists will be supplied with ONE Japanese backpack to transform using their own artistic style and their own materials.

* [cid:image003.png at 01CF1DC8.EB52A380] Please note: colours of the backpacks will vary.

* We welcome all forms of media.

* Artists are free to modify the structure of the backpack however it still must be able to be carried on the back as part of the opening ceremony may include a parade around Victoria with elementary schoolchildren from Victoria carrying the backpacks. Please consider this in the construction of your work. Also note that while every effort will be made to protect these pieces as works of art, damage may occur.

* The work should not be too heavy or too fragile.

Payment: $305 for participation upon receipt of the backpack according to the deadline listed below; plus reimbursement (up to $50) for shipping backpack to the Maritime Museum by June 9, 2014.
