Commemorating the Canadian Submarine Centenary

 
Canada's submarine service was born in Esquimalt on August 5, 1914 when the
First World War was declared. To commemorate this historic event 100 years
later, the Maritime Museum of British Columbia presents a lecture and book
signing by Julie H. Ferguson, one of the country's most respected
authorities on Canadian submarine history. The event will be held on Sunday,
August 3 at 2:00pm at the Museum. 
 
"It is important we recognize not only the contribution of the submarine
service, but also the personal stories and accounts," says Jon Irwin,
Executive Director at the Maritime Museum of BC. "For a century, Victoria
has taken pride in being the birthplace of a force so spirited and vital to
our country."
 
The essence of the proud service has been the submariners rather than the
boats - from the prairie boys in 1914 who'd never seen the sea, let alone a
submarine, to the highly trained sailors who serve in our Victoria class
today. The two extremes are inextricably linked by intense pride in the
submarine service and professionalism under difficult and often hazardous
conditions.

The Maritime Museum invites you to join Julie H. Ferguson as she shares her
knowledge of the Royal Canadian Navy's submarines, past and present.
