Royal BC Museum steps into summer with June events

VICTORIA, BC - The opening of a major exhibition and engaging interactive programming are among the highlights of Royal BC Museum events and activities during the month of June.

Royal BC Museum curator of archaeology Grant Keddie will be examining the deep history of the Vikings at the Vikings in Canada lecture on June 13, starting at 7 p.m. Keddie will be using DNA evidence to illuminate the origins of the Norse civilization and examine what we know about their visits to Canada around the year 1,000, nearly 500 years before Columbus "discovered" the New World.

The Royal BC Museum is proud to be a presenting partner of Aboriginal Cultural Festival 2014, taking place at the museum and archives campus from June 19 to 21. Hosted by the Aboriginal Tourism Association of BC and Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations, and in partnership with Tourism Victoria, Greater Victoria Harbour Society and First Peoples' Cultural Council, this three-day event will feature performances, demonstrations of traditional crafts, information on local Aboriginal art, a children's area, food vendors and booths.

Coinciding with Aboriginal Cultural Festival is the opening of the Our Living Languages: First Peoples' Voices in British Columbia exhibition at the Royal BC Museum on Saturday, June 21. This important new exhibition, presented in partnership with the First Peoples' Cultural Council, celebrates the diversity and resilience of BC's First Nations languages in the face of change.

The Saturday Night Alive events continue each weekend in June, with a hands-on, crafty look at history. In June animators will be teaching the basics of nålbinding, a technique used during the Viking age to knit yarn into mittens, socks and hats. Events start at 6 p.m. Visitors to the feature Vikings exhibition will particularly enjoy the opportunity to learn what life was like in the Viking age with this practical and fun activity.

The last Wonder Sunday before the summer break takes place June 29 and involves a field trip to Clover Point to take a look at the open ocean and the fascinating things that occupy it. Royal BC Museum invertebrate collections manager Heidi Gartner will be guiding a look at the inter-tidal zone during this interactive, learning-based special event that runs from 1 to 3 p.m. at Clover Point. Wonder Sunday is an ongoing event specifically geared for children and families.

Behind the Scenes tours continue in June, offering visitors an exclusive look at Royal BC Museum collections and operations. Tours on June 14 and 25 will take visitors to the museum's butterfly collection, June 11 and 18 tours will dig deep into the fossil collection, and Museum Alchemy tours on June 18, 21, 25 and 28 will show visitors how it all happens with a look at the exhibit arts studio and multimedia lab.

Tours are included in admission price and sign up begins one hour before the start time.
