Discover the story of BC First Nations Languages at the Royal BC Museum

VICTORIA, BC - On Saturday June 21, National Aboriginal Day, the Royal BC Museum and the First Peoples' Cultural Council will open a remarkable feature exhibition, Our Living Languages: First Peoples' Voices in BC.

Media are invited to learn more about the revitalization of First Nations languages in BC, as well as the unique partnership between the Royal BC Museum and the First Peoples' Cultural Council, at the exhibition opening.

Date:             Saturday, June 21
Time:             9:30 a.m.         Royal BC Museum doors open; light refreshments
10:00 a.m.       Speakers; performances by Art Napoleon and Miss Christie Lee
                        11 a.m.            Interview opportunities and exhibition viewing
Location:      Royal BC Museum, Victoria. Meet at Security in Clifford Carl Hall.

The exhibition runs from June 21, 2014 to June 2017 and features:

*         An interactive "language forest" that shows you how to greet someone in one of the 34 languages indigenous to BC
*         A fascinating history of language disruption and resurgence in BC's First Nations communities
*         An introduction to the groundbreaking strategies and technologies BC First Nations communities are using today to revitalize their languages
*         A cradleboard theatre, which replicates a woven basket, where visitors can listen to spoken words and lullabies.
*         Three stunning original artworks commissioned specifically for this exhibition by renowned BC First Nations artists Francis Dick, Jaalen Edenshaw and Debra Sparrow.
