Artist Marc Siegner offers an exploration of place
Marc Siegner: Adaptation
July 5 to Sept 28, 2014
June 26, 2014 - Kelowna, BC: Have you ever felt a powerful connection to a specific place - a kinship or curiosity to dig deeper into a location? Senior Canadian artist Marc Siegner had this experience during four visits he made to Beijing, beginning in 2009. He documented the neighbourhood where he stayed, named Fei Jia Cun, which is located beyond the city's fifth ring road, an expressway that is nearly 100 kilometres in length, and circles the city about ten kilometres out from the city centre.
Based in Edmonton, Alberta, Marc Siegner has focused most of his artistic practice within printmaking, but with his new work in Bejing, expanded into drawing, painting, photography, video, and installation components.
Siegner admits that during his first visit to Fei Jia Cun, where he stayed during an artist's residency, he barely noticed the neighbourhood where he lived, but as his stay there went on, he began spending more time in that locale, observing the way of life, as well as witnessing the growing threat of urban development to the neighbourhood.
Gallery goers will enter a multi-media installation that will include footage of residents speaking, and images of their day-to-day lives. The multivalent aspect to the work, and the multiple portals presented by Siegner into the world of the residents of Fei Jia Cun make for a rich and multi-layered visitor experience.
Marc Siegner holds an MFA from Norwich University, in Norwich, Vermont. He apprenticed under master printer Don Phillips at the Sword Street Press in Toronto, and is also the co-founder of Edmonton's Society of Northern Alberta Print-artists.
An opening reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held on Friday, July 4, 2014, from 7 to 9 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Artist Marc Siegner will be in attendance and will offer remarks at 7 pm. This will be a free event, open to members and guests, by invitation.
Marc Siegner: Adaptation will be on view at the Gallery from July 5 to Sept 28, 2014.
