Royal BC Museum celebrates old-timey Canada Day among July events

VICTORIA, BC - Summer is here, the sun is shining and the Royal BC Museum has a full slate of exciting events upcoming for the month of July.

To kick off the month, the simple pleasures of play will be celebrated at the Canada Day Old-Time Penny Carnival, held on the Royal BC Museum campus on July 1 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The penny may now be fit for a museum piece, but odds are everyone still has a few rattling around in drawers, jars and couches. Bring them down to the grounds surrounding Helmcken House and St Ann's Schoolhouse to try your hand at an egg-and-spoon race, bean bag toss and other fun old-timey events.

On July 10 come to the Royal BC Museum to parTEA with Silk Road. Our Vikings ParTEA evening includes instructions on making tea-infused cocktails, recipes, food and fun!

Just as the Royal BC Museum's Vikings: Lives Beyond the Legends exhibition slays the myths of Vikings being barbarians, Silk Road's tea mixing master Daniela Cubelic and acclaimed mixologist and Little Jumbo proprietor Shawn Soole are taking everything you know about teas and turning it upside-down.

The event, which includes demonstrations and features local liquors, runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets on sale now at https://sales.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/Default.aspx?tagid=6.

Vikings Summer Camps start up in July, giving youth ages 8 to 11 a chance to learn what it takes to be a Viking during week-long day-camp programming. Participants will explore behind the scenes of the Vikings: Lives Beyond the Legends exhibition, as well as heading into the great outdoors for some summer fun and learning.

Space is filling up fast for the Vikings Summer Camps and many are already full.

Behind the Scenes tours continue in July every Wednesday and Saturday with Museum Alchemy, a look at the Royal BC Museum's exhibit arts studio and multimedia lab. Participants will have the chance to see for themselves where museum staff brings new technology and age-old craft together to create the museum world.

Behind the Scenes tours run at 2 p.m., with sign-up starting an hour prior. Tours are limited to 10 people.

About the Royal BC Museum

Looking to the future, by 2017 the Royal BC Museum will be a refreshed, modern museum, extending its reach far beyond its two-hectare campus in Victoria as a world-class cultural venue and repository of digital treasures.
